FULL TIME: Everton 3-1 Southampton
It all started so well for Saints, who led at half time through Adam Armstrong's debut goal, but back came Everton to win Rafa Benitez's first competitive game in charge since his controversial appointment in the summer. Richarlison equalised early in the second period, before Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored twice in five minutes to settle it late on.
Three added minutes...
We're into stoppage time at Goodison Park.
McCarthy denies Iwobi
Everton are happy to play on the counter now. Richarlison feeds Iwobi through the middle, but his shot on his left foot is weak and comfortably saved.
Calvert-Lewin makes it three
Richarlison crosses from the right and Calvert-Lewin attacks it well with a diving header that squirms beyond McCarthy. It looks like Saints' poor record on the opening day is set to continue.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (81’) | 3 – 1
Yellow Card for Abdoulaye Doucouré (Everton)
The goalscorer goes into the book for taking off his shirt as he celebrated.
Doucoure fires Everton in front
It's a stunning strike from Doucoure, who has turned this game on its head to give the hosts the lead for the first time. He beats McCarthy high to his left with an explosive shot from 15 yards.
Abdoulaye Doucouré (75’) | 2 – 1
Djenepo looking lively
Lovely combination play between Djenepo and Perraud, who wanted the ball returned to him, but instead Djenepo's cross is deflected behind for a corner. Saints have had a handful of those recently, but Ward-Prowse has not managed to pick out a teammate.
McCarthy smothers Gray cross
The final ball is poor from the winger at the end of a quick counter-attack, and McCarthy can pounce on it.
Ward-Prowse worries Pickford
The skipper swirls in a corner right underneath the crossbar, forcing Pickford to back-pedal and fist the ball to safety.
Chance for Doucoure
Townsend attacks down the right and crosses for Doucoure, but the midfielder inadvertently hits Richarlison with his header, otherwise Saints may have been in trouble. The visitors need to weather this Everton storm.
The hosts have their tails up, as Keane tries to make amends for his earlier error, before Calvert-Lewin attempts to force home the loose ball, but McCarthy's bravery saves Saints again.
The hosts are level
Everton win another corner, which is played back into the box and over the head of Salisu for Richarlison to pounce and volley into the roof of the net from six yards.
Richarlison de Andrade (47’) | 1 – 1
The second half is under way
Everton kick-off and instantly win a corner down the left side, but Djenepo heads clear.
HALF TIME: Everton 0-1 Southampton
Saints are on course for a first league win at Goodison Park since 1997 and a first opening day victory since 2013. Debutant Adam Armstrong's brilliantly-taken goal separates the sides, after Ché Adams capitalised on an error from Michael Keane to feed his strike partner. The hosts' main threat has come from crosses to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but Saints are 45 minutes away from the perfect start.
Armstrong tests Pickford
It was optimistic, at best, from the deadlock-breaker, but one that shows his confidence and ability, as he hits a ferocious half-volley from a tight angle with his weaker left foot to force Pickford to push the ball behind for a corner. He's got that self-belief you need to score goals.
Calvert-Lewin heads wide
There's a clear gameplan for Everton here - get the ball wide and cross it. It's an old-fashioned tactic but with Calvert-Lewin up front, it makes sense. The England man is exceptional in the air, but this time his glancing touch from another Townsend delivery sails wide.
Digne strikes the wall
That was a free-kick in prime position for Everton after a foul by Salisu, but the Saints wall stands tall and Digne can't get it up and over.
Yellow Card for Richarlison de Andrade (Everton)
Richarlison bursts into the box and throws himself down, but Romeu had not even attempted a tackle, and the Brazilian is rightly booked for a dive.
HE'S UP AND RUNNING!
It's a goal for the Saints debutant! Adams caught defender Keane in possession and poked the ball through for his strike partner, who kept his cool to dispatch an unerring finish into the top corner - brilliantly taken!
Adam Armstrong (22’) | 0 – 1
Townsend threatens for Everton
That was a delicious cross from the home debutant - it teased a host of bodies in the middle, with Richarlison closest to it, but McCarthy was brave and held on.
Promising run from Djenepo
The winger weaves his way past two defenders, but can't quite pick out Adams with his cutback. This game hasn't really come to life yet.
Lively start from Livramento
The teenager, preferred to Walker-Peters this afternoon, is showing good intent to attack down the right and looks an encouraging outlet for Saints.
Calvert-Lewin heads over
Gray gets to the byeline and delivers a fine cross towards the near post, where Calvert-Lewin meets it in the air but cannot keep his header down to trouble McCarthy.
First save for McCarthy
Allan runs on to the ball on the edge of the box and strikes it first time, hard and low, but McCarthy's handling is up to the task.
