Key moments so far

  • Pereira's penalty fires West Brom in front at The Hawthorns
  • Phillips adds quick-fire second to double the lead
  • Robinson fires in Albion's third in the second half
  • Johnstone saves late Ward-Prowse penalty

we're very disappointed. in the first half we didn't really get to grips with them - the first 15-20 minutes we barely had the ball. the second half we were a lot better, but only created half-chances, nothing clear cut. the third goal made it a real uphill task."

FULL TIME: West Brom 3-0 Southampton

It's a night to forget for Saints, who have been well beaten at The Hawthorns. Matheus Pereira fired the hosts in front from the penalty spot, before Matt Phillips slid in to score at the far post three minutes later. Callum Robinson added Albion's third in the second half, while James Ward-Prowse saw a late penalty saved to sum up a very difficult evening.

+5’

That sums up Saints' night... Johnstone dives to his right to repel the spot-kick.

73’

Sponsored by Utilita

Robinson makes it three

Yokuslu threads a pass through for Robinson, who drills the ball past Forster.

69’

GOAL

Callum Robinson (69’) | 3 0

68’

Yokuslu fires over

A rare West Brom attack since half-time results in a free-kick in shooting range, but Yokuslu's effort never looks like troubling Forster.

62’

Johnstone denies Armstrong

Saints are bossing the possession now, but the latest attack forces only a routine save from Johnstone after Armstrong lets fly.

61’

Furlong gets back at Redmond

Better from Saints, as Ings flicks the ball around the corner for Redmond, but the winger is stopped by some excellent defending by the sliding Furlong.

57’

Armstrong on the attack

Played in by Ings, the Scot is halted by an important last-ditch tackle, before the resulting corner is cleared.

52’

More intent from Saints...

No chances yet in the second half but Saints already look a different side, forcing West Brom back. Score the next goal and it's game on...

46’

We're back under way...

The second half is up and running. Big improvement needed!

HALF TIME: West Brom 2-0 Southampton

Saints look shell-shocked here, trailing at the interval to two first-half goals. Matheus Pereira opened the scoring from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Fraser Forster, before Matt Phillips slid in at the far post to make it two. There have been other chances for the hosts, clearly buoyed by putting five past Chelsea. Saints recovered from 2-0 down last week... can they do it again?

41’

Yokuslu fires over

A hopeful shot from distance comes to nothing.

38’

Yellow Card for James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

The skipper goes into the book for holding back Pereira.

Phillips makes it two

Saints are in big trouble now, as Diagne crosses low for Phillips to double Albion's advantage.

35’

GOAL

Matt Phillips (35’) | 2 0

West Brom lead

Straight down the middle from the Brazilian, who picks himself up to score.

32’

GOAL

Matheus Fellipe Costa Pereira (32’) | 1 0

32’

Penalty to West Brom

Forster rushes out and sends Pereira tumbling. The hosts have a spot-kick.

31’

Great strike from Armstrong

The Scot tests Johnstone from 20 yards with an excellent shot, but the keeper beats it away.

30’

Diagne misfires

What a chance - the best of the lot for West Brom, as Pereira feeds Diagne, but his shot is high and wide when he should've scored inside the box.

28’

Another chance for Saints!

Redmond picks out Armstrong, whose shot on the turn falls for Ings, who angles the ball back across goal but West Brom survive.

26’

Ings goes close

Clever footwork from Redmond, who goes down in the box but no penalty is forthcoming. The loose ball falls for Ings, who gets his shot off, but it sails narrowly wide.

22’

Forster denies Pereira

There was not much power in the header, making it a straightforward save for the keeper, but it's another chance for the Baggies.

19’

Crucial defending from Bertrand

He gets back to dispossess Diagne just as the striker was ready to pull the trigger. Saints need to find a foothold in this game.

17’

Furlong heads wide

The defender finds space at the near post but his glancing header flashes wide of the far post.

12’

Forster denies Townsend

West Brom have started well here. Another good move sees Townsend pick up a good position, but his low shot is blocked by the legs of Forster.

11’

Walker-Peters forces a save

Tremendous work from the full-back to chase down a raking pass from Vestergaard and beat his man, but he opts to go for goal from a tight angle and Johnstone is happy to parry the ball behind for a corner at his near post.

9’

Robinson goes close

Callum Robinson gets across the near post to connect with a cross from the left, but cannot direct the chance on target.

6’

Saints survive an early scare

That's a let-off. Forster parries Phillips's shot to Furlong, whose effort is touched in by Diagne from close range, only for the striker to be fractionally offside and the goal is ruled out.
