SOU vs MCI As It Happened

Key moments so far

  • Southampton beaten by Raheem Sterling's 16th-minute opener at St Mary's
  • Danny Ings forced off in first half with injury, replaced by Nathan Tella
  • Saints were 1-0 victors over Pep Guardiola's men in this fixture last season, back in July
  • Saints third at the start of the weekend, four points ahead of City who have won just 5/12

i think we played a better game than in the summer when we won 1-0. we were much braver and had a lot of pressure on them, we just lacked a bit of quality in the final third and creating the final chances. we had one day less to recover and the effort the guys put in was unbelievable."

FULL TIME: Southampton 0-1 Manchester City

Saints gave everything, but City have held on for victory here at St Mary's, sealed by Raheem Sterling's first-half winner. The visitors had to work hard for their clean sheet, but the loss of Danny Ings to injury did not help Saints' cause. Ralph Hasenhüttl finished the game with Academy duo Nathan Tella and Dan N'Lundulu leading the line, but there proved no way through.

+2’

Five added minutes...

We're into stoppage time, and City are threatening to wrap the game up. Bernardo is guilty of one pass too many in setting up Mahrez, who volleys over.

86’

Tella's cross gathered by Ederson

It's a low ball from the left with N'Lundulu and Walcott to aim for, but the ball is pounced upon by the grateful Ederson. Can this youthful Saints frontline unlock the door?

83’

Southampton substitution: Dan Nlundulu replaces Ché Adams

Adams is sacrificed and N'Lundulu joins fellow rookie Tella in an inexperienced attack.

Sponsored by Utilita

82’

Yellow Card for Ederson Santana de Moraes (Manchester City)

The City keeper is booked for time wasting, which tells you the visitors are hanging on a bit.

81’

More pressure from Saints...

We're into the last 10 minutes and Saints have not given up hope just yet. Ward-Prowse delivers a lovely cross, but Adams gets his head to it in front of Bertrand who was better placed, and the ball runs away to safety from a City point of view.

79’

A top save from McCarthy!

Gundogan shoots towards the top corner from the edge of the box, but McCarthy extends every inch of his frame to tip it over - a fantastic save!

74’

Adams heads wide

First we've really seen of Tella, as the youngster escapes down the right and delivers a low cross that takes a looping deflection off Stones, but Adams is back-pedalling and can't generate the power to head the ball home.

71’

Saints nearly punished

Some sloppiness at the back, as a mix-up at the back allows City to break, but De Bruyne shoots too close to McCarthy, who makes a routine save.

65’

Romeu's cross is overhit

A terrific break from Saints - there's been a few of those - and the ball is set back for Romeu to cross, but his delivery is just too deep for the onrushing Bertrand and goes behind.

63’

Redmond involved straightaway

The substitute has been heavily involved already, shooting tamely at Ederson, before missing his kick completely from a promising Walcott cross. But Redmond, and Saints, are looking lively.

61’

A worrying moment for City

Ward-Prowse swings in a corner just under Ederson's bar, forcing the keeper to push the ball behind for another. This time there's a game of pinball inside the City box and the ball strikes Sterling on the arm, but it hits his knee first, and no penalty is forthcoming.

59’

Southampton substitution: Nathan Redmond replaces Moussa Djenepo

Second change for Saints is a straight swap, as Redmond replaces Djenepo.

Sponsored by Utilita

54’

City threaten a second

More brilliance from De Bruyne, who has already set up one goal today. This time he combines with Sterling and picks out Bernardo Silva, but he scuffs his shot and McCarthy can pounce on it.

47’

Torres goes close

An early warning shot for Saints in this second half. Torres receives Cancelo's diagonal pass, carries the ball into the box and shoots across McCarthy, and it's only narrowly wide of the far post.

45’

City get the game restarted

We're under way in the second half!

HALF-TIME: Southampton 0-1 Manchester City

Saints trail at the break, but that does not tell the full story. After a bright opening, the hosts fell behind to Raheem Sterling's neat finish from Kevin De Bruyne's cutback. But since then Saints have responded well and finished the first half on top, with Ché Adams, Danny Ings, Theo Walcott and Jannik Vestergaard all going close. Ings has been forced off by injury, replaced by Nathan Tella.

45’

2️⃣ added minutes...

We're into first-half stoppage time.

42’

Yellow Card for James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

Another booking, this time for the skipper.

42’

Southampton substitution: Nathan Tella replaces Danny Ings

Ings heads down the tunnel, and it's the youngster Tella who comes on in his place. A huge day for him!

Sponsored by Utilita

40’

Ings goes down...

The striker looks in some discomfort here. Can he continue?

38’

Yellow Card for Oriol Romeu (Southampton)

Romeu catches Torres after a loose touch in midfield, and joins De Bruyne in the book.

35’

A great chance for Adams!

Saints are pushing hard now, and Walcott delivers a peach of a cross for Adams, only for the striker to fail to make a substantial contact from six yards, and the ball is deflected away by Stones. Then Vestergaard heads the resulting corner over the bar. More encouraging signs!

30’

Vestergaard denied by Ederson

A familiar route to goal for Saints, as a Ward-Prowse corner is met by a thumping Vestergaard header, but Ederson holds on safely. This is a good spell from the hosts.

29’

Ings heads wide

The closest Saints have come! Walcott helps the ball across goal for Ings, who gets there before Dias and heads just wide, but in the process he's caught by the defender. Wouldn't that be a foul outside the box? No penalty is given, despite the striker's appeals.

26’

Yellow Card for Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

De Bruyne catches Bertrand with a late tackle and the City skipper goes into the book.

22’

Better from Saints!

Saints enjoyed the best of the opening 10 minutes, but the next 10 were definitely City's. Now back come the hosts, as Ings sees a shot blocked, before Ederson beats away a drive shot from Walcott. That will give the home team a lift!

Sterling opens the scoring

City are in front, as De Bruyne cuts the ball back perfectly for Sterling, who makes no mistake with a simple finish from 10 yards.

16’

GOAL

Raheem Sterling (16’) | 0 1

16’

Rodri scores... but the flag is up

A sigh of relief for Saints, as Rodri arrives around the back to tuck away a dangerous cross from a free-kick, but Saints hold a perfect offside line and the goal is rightly chalked off.

14’

McCarthy makes his first save

The keeper is tested from distance by an explosive shot from Cancelo, but dives to his left to push it behind for a corner, which Saints deal with.

11’

Sterling fires over

A first attempt at goal for the visitors, as the ball runs invitingly into the path of Sterling, but the England man shoots high over the top from 20 yards.

9’

Sustained possession for City

This is the first time the visitors have been able to string a number of passes together. City look to release Torres in behind, but Vestergaard gets across with a crucial interception to diffuse the danger.

6’

First attack for Saints!

An encouraging start, as Ings drives at the City defence and releases Djenepo to his left. The winger's low cross is deflected behind for a corner, which City defend.
