Key moments so far
- Trossard finishes off a fine team move to give Brighton three points at St Mary's
- Seagulls captain Lewis Dunk headed the visitors into the lead from a corner
- Ché Adams scored his third goal in three games to volley Saints level in the first half
- Adams denied by goalkeeper Robert Sánchez from Saints' best chance to equalise
it was simply not good, especially in the second half. we had only one or two chances against a team that were fighting for everything and showed a little bit more effort than we did, i think, in some moments. it is not enough."ralph hasenhüttlsouthampton manager

FULL TIME: Southampton 1-2 Brighton
That's a painful defeat for Saints, who drew level in the first half only for Brighton to up their game in the second period. Leandro Trossard finished off a slick team move to win the game for the visitors 11 minutes after the break. Saints' best chance to equalise for a second time fell to goalscorer Ché Adams, but keeper Robert Sanchez made a vital stop that ultimately proved decisive.
3️⃣ added minutes...
Keep pushing, Saints!
Forster keeps out Zeqiri
The substitute gets a shot off from a tight angle, but Forster thwarts him at his near post. The corner comes to nothing for Brighton.
Important covering from Vestergaard
Maupay leads a counter for Brighton, charging into the box, but Vestergaard gets back to diffuse the danger in the nick of time.
Zeqiri drills one across goal
Who knows whether it was a shot or a cross, but Zeqiri fires a low ball across the box that had Forster worried, but ultimately flies wide of the far post.
Adams goes close!
Tella is fouled just outside the box, but play is allowed to continue and Adams is denied by Sanchez. The referee goes back to award a free-kick, which Ward-Prowse takes, but it's deflected behind for a corner. Saints will be ruing the chance spurned by goalscorer Adams.
Trossard fires Brighton back in front
That's an excellent team goal from the visitors, as Lallana picks out Welbeck, whose first-time pass feeds Trossard, who keeps his head to finish emphatically. No chance for Forster, and Saints will have to come from behind for a second time.
Leandro Trossard (56’) | 1 – 2
Ward-Prowse tests Sanchez
The skipper has time to set himself on the edge of the box and strikes the ball well, but it's a fairly routine save for the Brighton keeper low to his right.
We're back into the action!
The second half is under way at St Mary's...
HALF TIME: Southampton 1-1 Brighton
It's all square at the interval in what has been a decent watch so far. Brighton took the lead with a powerful downward header from captain Lewis Dunk, but the advantage lasted just 11 minutes, as Ché Adams brilliantly volleyed Saints level. The Seagulls will feel they should have been back in front when Pascal Groß went through on goal, but Fraser Forster spread himself well to make a vital save.
2️⃣ added minutes...
We're into stoppage time at the end of an entertaining first half.
Crucial save from Forster!
A flowing move from Brighton, as Burn finds Groß in space on the right. He's got a clear sight of goal, but his low shot is blocked by Forster's trailing leg. That was a golden chance for the visitors to retake the lead.
Great hold-up play from Adams
He's playing with a lot of confidence these days, and Adams protects the ball well near the touchline to win a free-kick in crossing range for Ward-Prowse. It nearly finds Bednarek at the near post, but Dunk does enough to deny the Pole a clean contact.
What a finish, Ché!
Saints are level! Armstrong's cross is headed back across goal by Bertrand and volleyed home emphatically by Adams from six yards. That's three in three for the striker!
Ché Adams (26’) | 1 – 1
Good pressure from Saints
Minamino tries a shot that prompts some pinball inside the Brighton box. The visitors struggle to clear, and Saints work it wide for Armstrong, whose cross is deflected behind for a corner. Or so we thought, but the flag is now raised for an earlier offside.
Dunk heads Brighton in front
Brighton captain Dunk attacks the resulting corner, connecting sweetly with a header that nestles into the bottom corner beyond the despairing dive of Forster down to his left.
Lewis Dunk (16’) | 0 – 1
Forster denies Maupay
Lovely move from Brighton, as Welbeck's flick finds Maupay on the edge of the box. The Frenchman shoots left footed, forcing a diving save from Forster to parry the ball behind for a corner.
Tella's pass just overhit
Saints look to counter-attack with speed, but Tella's pass in behind is just too heavy for Minamino, and Sanchez is able to mop up the danger.
Armstrong forces a save
Walker-Peters combines with Adams, whose square pass is struck first time by Armstrong, but the shot lacks power and is easily dealt with by goalkeeper Sanchez.
An early chance for Brighton
Ex-Saint Lallana threads a pass through to Maupay, whose cutback is hit first time by Trossard, who sees two shots blocked, but Maupay was subsequently flagged offside in the build-up.
Adams heads wide
Saints are quick out of the blocks and create an early chance as Bertrand crosses for Adams, but the ball is fractionally behind the striker, and his header bounces wide of goal. Positive signs early on!
