it was a tough game. we were unlucky with two decisions, but it's a good point on the road. we were resilient and stopped them creating any real clear-cut chances."kyle walker-peterssouthampton defender
FULL TIME: Fulham 0-0 Southampton
It finishes goalless at Craven Cottage, where James Ward-Prowse hit the bar from a first-half free-kick and Shane Long and Theo Walcott both had goals ruled out for offside. Saints pushed for the winner in the absence of Jannik Vestergaard, Oriol Romeu, Nathan Redmond and Danny Ings, but will have to settle for a point and a sixth Premier League clean sheet of the season.16.58
Crucial block from Stephens!
One last chance here, as Aina smashes a shot goalwards, but Stephens heroically throws himself in the way and makes a fantastic block to preserve a clean sheet on his return to the side.
Mitrovic goes close...
The striker meets Robinson's low cross from the left with a first-time shot, but it's a yard wide and McCarthy watches it past the post.
4️⃣ added minutes...
We're into stoppage time in the capital.
VAR Decision: Goal awarded for Southampton [Theo Walcott] was cancelled
The goal is chalked off! Adams was offside before delivering the cross, and it remains goalless 😭
Walcott scores! But is he onside?
A well-worked goal, as Long helps the ball down the line for Adams, whose low cross is tucked away by Walcott!
Theo Walcott (84’) | 0 – 1
Stephens heads wide
Half a chance for the defender, but he can't get enough on the header to guide it into the far corner.
Long scores...but the flag is up 😩
The Irishman steals in behind the Fulham defence and finishes Bertrand's pass in style, but the flag is raised and rightly so - the goal is chalked off.
Yellow Card for André-Frank Zambo Anguissa (Fulham)
Armstrong surges forward and Anguissa is booked for halting the counter-attack.
Fulham survive a penalty claim
That looked as though Saints might be set to be awarded a spot-kick after Bertrand's volleyed cross struck Aina's outstretched arm. But after halting the game for VAR to review the incident, the verdict is no penalty.
Long goes close
Better from Saints! Long has a go from 20 yards and strikes it well, but it's straight down the middle of the goal and Areola raises a hand to tip it over.
Reed's shot deflected
The former Saint tries his luck with a shot from range that takes a deflection, but McCarthy is able to adjust and make a comfortable save.
Adams's cross is too long
The striker seeks his partner, Long, but his cross from the left is just too long and goes behind for a goal kick. Still very little in the game here.
Cavaleiro heads wide
That was a good chance for Fulham, as Cavaleiro finds space in the box to meet a cross from the left, but his header is high and wide of McCarthy's goal. He was completely unmarked in the middle.
Robinson's shot blocked
First notable attack of the second half, as the Fulham wing-back makes up good ground to get into the box, but as he cuts inside, Walker-Peters is there to make a crucial block.
We're back up and running...
The second half is under way at Craven Cottage!
The closest we've come...
The skipper was so unlucky from that free-kick! Let's keep pushing in the second half 💪
HALF-TIME: Fulham 0-0 Southampton
Not a first half that will live long in the memory. Southampton have come closest, as James Ward-Prowse threatened to break the deadlock from a trademark free-kick that was expertly kept out by goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, with the help of his goal frame. Then the loose ball just bounced away from Ché Adams, who looked set to score the rebound. Saints will hope for more in the second period.
Bertrand gets forward
An encouraging overlap from the left-back, who runs beyond Armstrong and crosses low to the near post, but Areola holds on before Adams can pounce.
Yellow Card for Bobby De Cordova-Reid (Fulham)
The first yellow card of the game goes to the Fulham right wing-back - a harsh decision, it must be said, as he seemed to take the ball cleanly from Ward-Prowse.
McCarthy out quickly
Lookman races on to a ball in behind the Saints defence, but out comes McCarthy to dive at his feet and smother the danger.
It's a brilliant attempt from Ward-Prowse, who beats the wall and sends the ball arrowing towards the top corner, but goalkeeper Areola pushes it against the crossbar. It looks as though Adams is primed to score from the rebound, but the ball agonisingly spins away from the onrushing striker. Fulham's turn to breathe a mighty sigh of relief.
Free-kick in JWP territory...
This is a tempting position for the skipper to strike.
Golden chance for Anguissa
Fulham break at pace and Loftus-Cheek crosses accurately to the far post, where Lookman tees up Anguissa, but the midfielder completely misses his kick. That's a huge let-off for Saints.
The Scot started on the right, but has drifted into more central positions and has now swapped with Walcott. So it's now Walcott on the right and Armstrong on the left, as Saints search for openings.
Sustained possession for Saints
Saints are doing a good job of just diffusing Fulham's early momentum here. It's a controlled spell of possession for the visitors, who are growing into the game.
Handball appeal for Fulham
The ball gets flicked up on to Bednarek's arm, striking the defender on the elbow, but Saints survive some optimistic penalty appeals. Fulham on the front foot now in these early exchanges.
McCarthy makes the first save
That's the first time either goalkeeper has been called upon. Lookman's shot takes a deflection that takes the pace off the ball, resulting in an easy stooping save for McCarthy, low to his left.
Boys in blue 💙
Saints are in their blue away strip this afternoon and have started reasonably well, but no chances at either end so far.
