FULL TIME: Southampton 2-1 Norwich City

It's all over! Saints have secured back-to-back 2-1 home wins to give their survival chances a huge lift! The first-half performance laid the foundations, as Danny Ings and Ryan Bertrand both profited from James Ward-Prowse set-pieces, but the second period was a tough slog. Norwich pulled one back through top scorer Teemu Pukki, and applied plenty of late pressure, but Saints held on for victory!

+3’

A golden chance for Byram...

Brilliant approach play from Norwich, as Hernández picks out Byram. His first shot is blocked by Yoshida, before his second is sliced high and wide. Saints are nearly there!

+1’

Buendia heads wide

That was half a chance... Aarons crosses from the right, but substitute Buendia can only get a glancing touch, and the ball rolls harmlessly wide.

90’

4️⃣ added minutes...

Norwich are throwing everybody forward now... 😨

89’

Bednarek blocks Pukki's shot

The striker turns sharply on the edge of the area, but Bednarek stays with him and protects McCarthy's goal.

Down to the last 5️⃣

The clock is ticking at St Mary's... keep going, lads!

84’

Southampton substitution: Maya Yoshida replaces Shane Long

Yoshida bolsters the defensive ranks for the closing stages, as Long departs to a standing ovation 👏

83’

Norwich City substitution: Emiliano Buendía replaces Todd Cantwell

Final change for the visitors. Seven minutes left...

82’

Aarons thwarts Redmond

The defender makes an initial mess of clearing his lines, but then throws himself in the way of Redmond's shot, as Norwich survive a late scare.

The end of the night for this man...

Not a bad little run he's on, is it? 9️⃣ goals in his last 🔟 games 🤤

76’

Southampton substitution: Ché Adams replaces Danny Ings

A straight swap up front as the game enters the final 15 minutes.

2️⃣0️⃣ minutes to go... ⏳

It's game on again at St Mary's... what do the closing stages have in store?

71’

Southampton substitution: Oriol Romeu replaces Moussa Djenepo

That's the end of Djenepo's night - on comes Romeu to shore things up.

Sponsored by Utilita

67’

Cédric tests Krul

It's a good response from Saints, as Cédric lets fly from 20 yards with a crisp strike, but Krul acrobatically parries the ball away from danger.

Norwich pull a goal back...

The visitors have one back, as Tettey threads a fine pass through the defence, and it's a familiar outcome as Pukki makes no mistake with another smart finish to add to his collection.

64’

GOAL

Teemu Pukki (64’) | 2 1

64’

So close to number three!

Ings controls an awkward ball and swivels to shoot on the volley, all in one motion. It's a brilliant attempt, and Krul is relieved to see the ball skid just past his far post.

63’

Yellow Card for Sam Byram (Norwich City)

Byram goes right through the back of Djenepo. Play is allowed to continue, but the referee comes back to book the defender retrospectively.

60’

Stiepermann shoots over

The substitute pulls the trigger from the edge of the box, but it's well over the top. Norwich are still pushing for a way back into this game.

59’

Yellow Card for Moussa Djenepo (Southampton)

An easy decision for the referee - Djenepo goes into the book for halting a Norwich breakaway.

58’

McCarthy saves from Byram

A timely reminder this game is not done and dusted yet, as Norwich launch a counter-attack and Byram shoots at the end of it - an easy save for McCarthy, though.

57’

Long pokes it wide

Good pressure from Saints, who pin Norwich back, as a stretching Long sends a shot towards the far post, but it bounces wide.

55’

Another penalty claim!

This time Long goes down after a nudge in the back from Godfrey, but again referee Kevin Friend isn't interested.

54’

Djenepo goes down...

The winger bursts into the box and gets knocked to the floor by Zimmermann, but it's not enough to be penalised and Saints claims for a penalty fall on deaf ears.

45’

The second half is under way...

We're back up and running at St Mary's. More of the same, please!

48’

Pukki tests McCarthy

First save McCarthy has had to make, as top scorer Pukki stings his palms with a rasping shot from the edge of the box.

47’

Norwich City substitution: Alexander Tettey replaces Tom Trybull

Tettey joins Stiepermann in coming on at the break.

46’

Norwich City substitution: Marco Stiepermann replaces Ibrahim Amadou

It's a half-time double change for the visitors...

HALF TIME: Southampton 2-0 Norwich City

So far so good for Saints, who are on course for back-to-back home wins! Danny Ings struck first, heading his 10th goal of the season from a James Ward-Prowse free-kick, before another Ward-Prowse set-piece was flicked on by Shane Long and turned in by Ryan Bertrand for number two. Norwich have looked neat and tidy in possession, but Alex McCarthy has so far remained untroubled in the Saints goal.

+1’

2️⃣ added minutes...

We're into first-half stoppage time and Saints are pushing for a third goal...

45’

Højbjerg denied by Krul

The ball bobbles invitingly out of the box towards the Saints skipper, who is urged to "SHOOT!" by the home fans and duly obliges, hitting a rocket that Krul does well to tip over his bar.

GOALSCORER 21 Ryan Bertrand

It's TWO!!!

Saints have doubled their lead at St Mary's! Another Ward-Prowse set-piece this time finds Long at the near post, whose flick-on is turned in by Bertrand at the far!

42’

GOOOAL!!!

Ryan Bertrand (42’) | 2 0

Man of the moment! 📸

It's now a perfect 🔟 for Danny Ings, who moves into double figures with his headed goal midway through the first half at St Mary's. It's still the difference between the sides, with half time approaching.

35’

Aarons takes a painful blow... 🤕

...But Norwich will be glad that he did, after Ings negotiates a yard of space in the box and pulls the trigger, only to see his left-footed shot smack the defender on the head. He's down and receiving treatment, but should be fine to continue.

32’

Djenepo fires over

That was close! Djenepo conjures something from nothing as he lets fly on his left foot, but the ball whistles just inches over the crossbar.

31’

Neat approach play from Norwich

The visitors, initially rocked by the goal, have just put together their best move of the game. Some lovely build-up play is rather wasted when Byram, looking right across the line, is flagged offside.

25’

Redmond's shot is blocked

Saints have finally scored first in a home game! You can sense the confidence growing, as Ings releases Redmond down the left, but his eventual shot is blocked as the winger eyes a goal against his former club.

GOALSCORER 9 Danny Ings

HE'S DONE IT AGAIN!!!

Danny Ings is the man for Saints yet again, as the striker gets across the front post to guide an expert free-kick from James Ward-Prowse into the net! Get in!

21’

GOOOAL!!!

Danny Ings (21’) | 1 0

17’

Long gets up well

A terrific leap from Long, who meets Cédric's deep cross at the far post, but there's not enough pace on the ball and the striker can't generate enough power to trouble Krul in the Norwich goal.

15’

McLean shoots wide

First moment of genuine concern for either side, as McLean finds a yard of space on the edge of the box and takes aim with a low shot, but he drags it a yard wide of McCarthy's right-hand post.

11’

Norwich coming into the game

It's not been the most eventful first 10 minutes, and the visitors are starting to settle into the game now, enjoying more possession. Still no attempts on goal at either end.

6’

Bright start from Saints!

The hosts have been the team in the ascendancy so far, as Djenepo goes on a run and feeds Cédric on the right, whose low cross is cleared to safety.

it was important that we took three points for the mentality, the atmosphere and the self-confidence. but this is a completely different game, against a good opponent who has shown they can compete with the bigger teams in the league."
