Saints vs NEW As It Happened
Key moments so far
- Saint-Maximin breaks Saints' resistance with 79th-minute opener at St Mary's
- Djenepo sent off in the 27th minute after his initial yellow card was upgraded to a red
- McCarthy makes multiple saves in the first half to keep Saints on level terms
- Saints' number one keeps out Ritchie's penalty on the stroke of half time
FULL TIME: Southampton 0-1 Newcastle United
Saints have been beaten, but they gave it everything. The first-half dismissal of Moussa Djenepo ultimately proved crucial, as the hosts tired late on, allowing Newcastle to steal the points through Allan Saint-Maximin's 79th-minute winner. The second half was actually more even than the first, in which Alex McCarthy kept his team in the game with a flurry of saves, including a penalty stop.
4️⃣ added minutes...
Keep going, lads! 💪
Yellow Card for Joelinton Cássio Apolinário de Lira (Newcastle United)
Joelinton is booked for kicking the ball away in a bid to waste time.
Boufal volleyed saved
The ball drops nicely for Boufal, but it's an ambitious effort from the Moroccan, who doesn't quite catch his volley as he'd like, and Dubravka saves comfortably.
Saint-Maximin makes the breakthrough
The winger pounces on some hesitant defending from Valery and beats McCarthy with a low shot via the inside of the post.
GOAL
Allan Saint-Maximin (78’) | 0 – 1

Vicious strike from Long!
The ball sits up nicely and Long hits a rocket of a shot that almost knocks Dubravka back into his goal, but the keeper repels the danger and his team survive a scare.
2️⃣0️⃣ minutes to go...
Newcastle are starting to enjoy much more of the ball now, as Saints drop deeper. There will be some tired legs out there - Saints have been down to 10 men for more than 40 minutes now.
Brilliant recovery from Bertrand!
The pacey Saint-Maximin looked to have got away, but back came the left-back to make a crucial tackle just in the nick of time.
The home fans really playing their part here 👏
It's a raucous atmosphere at St Mary's - the Saints fans are revelling in the adversity of the big decisions in this game and dragging their team along with them. The players are responding, too.
Yellow Card for Matt Ritchie (Newcastle United)
As cynical as it gets from Ritchie, who drags Højbjerg down after the skipper intercepts Shelvey's pass in midfield.
Hayden heads wide
That's half a chance for the visitors, as Ritchie's inswinging corner is headed wide by Hayden at the near post.
More encouragement for Saints...
Boufal's pass in behind for Bertrand is just fractionally overhit, as Saints players queued up for a cross, but there's enough to suggest there might be a goal in this for the depleted hosts.
High and wide from Long
That might be Saints' best opening since being reduced to 10 men. Great work from Højbjerg, who feeds the ball through for Long, but the Irishman shoots wildly on the angle with Ings screaming for a cross.
Ritchie tries his luck
The Newcastle man's shot is deflected over, and the visitors have the first corner of the second half. McCarthy comes out, dominates his box and claims it handsomely.
The second half is under way
Can 10-man Saints dig deep to get something out of this game?
HALF TIME: Southampton 0-0 Newcastle United
What a surreal half. First things first, Saints are happy to be on level terms, but that barely tells the story. The game swung on the 27th-minute dismissal of Moussa Djenepo, whose yellow card for catching Isaac Hayden was upgraded to red after the referee consulted the pitch-side monitor. Then VAR intervened again to award Newcastle a penalty, but the outstanding Alex McCarthy kept it out.
Yellow Card for Javier Manquillo (Newcastle United)
Manquillo is booked for lunging in on Bertrand. Saints are incensed and want a red... will this one be checked? No.
SAVED BY MCCARTHY!
It's another outstanding stop from the Saints keeper, who gets down low to his left to keep out Ritchie's driven spot-kick!
Penalty to Newcastle 😠
Play has been brought back and Boufal has been penalised for handball! Saints are getting no luck from the officials today. It's ex-Portsmouth man Ritchie to take...
Yellow Card for Federico Fernández (Newcastle United)
Fernandez is booked for holding back Boufal as Saints threatened to counter-attack following a Newcastle corner.
Lascelles scores... but the flag is up
Ritchie's free-kick is volleyed home by Lascelles at the far post, but the flag goes up. "Check it" says the goalscorer, but replays confirm he was definitely offside.
Another chance missed by Gayle...
Wasteful is an understatement for the Newcastle attack so far. Saint-Maximin gets to the byeline and cuts the ball back for Gayle, who looks certain to score, but steers the chance wide from six yards. A huge let-off.
McCarthy rescues Saints again
The hosts need to find their focus again, because Gayle was left completely unmarked as he stooped to head goalwards from a right-wing cross. Thankfully, McCarthy is there to save his team again, and it remains 0-0.
VAR Decision: Card upgrade for Southampton [Moussa Djenepo] was confirmed
He's off 😩 That's the end of Djenepo's afternoon and Saints are down to 10 men. The incident has been replayed on the big screen and the Saints fans are far from happy.
Yellow Card for Moussa Djenepo (Southampton)
Djenepo overruns the ball and is late on Hayden as he tries to retrieve it. He goes into the book, but it looks like the referee is now going to check the incident on the pitch-side monitor...
Valery tests Dubravka
That's the first save the Newcastle keeper has had to make - Valery makes up ground down the right-hand side, drifts infield and lets fly with his left foot. It's a well-struck shot, but too close to Dubravka, who makes a routine stop.
Long bursts into the box
That was a chance for Saints, as Long gets himself into a great position, but fires his cross beyond Ings and Djenepo who are up in support. With a better final ball, that could've been the opener!
The game has settled down...
It was a lively start at both ends, but now things have calmed down a bit. No surprise that two teams side by side in the table are cancelling each other out so far.
Amazing reflexes from McCarthy! 😱
It's still all square here but only thanks to some absolute heroics from McCarthy, who makes a TRIPLE save to keep Newcastle out! First he denies Gayle, before somehow repelling two further chances for Almiron, all in the same phase of play. Brilliant goalkeeping 👏👏
Djenepo goes close!
Boufal catches Rose napping and charges into the box. He cuts the ball back for Djenepo, who looks set to score, but Ritchie appears from nowhere with a fine last-ditch tackle to save his team.
Early pressure from Saints 💪
Ward-Prowse whips in a dangerous free-kick headed behind for a corner, before Ings flicks on Bertrand's delivery, but it's deflected wide.
We're under way at St Mary's!
The pre-match pleasantries are complete, albeit no handshakes this week, and Newcastle have got the action up and running. Come on, Saints!
