- Neal Maupay gives Brighton the lead, firing low past McCarthy
Report: Ings hits landmark goal in Brighton draw
Danny Ings became the first Southampton player in 17 years to hit 20 Premier League goals, as his second-half equaliser secured a point against Brighton & Hove Albion at St Mary’s. Our report.
22.22FULL-TIME: Saints 1-1 Brighton
It finishes all square at St Mary's, as Danny Ings scores his 20th league goal of the season. Saints shaded the chances in the end, dominating the second half but couldn't find an elusive second.
Højbjerg from range
He has a habit of scoring against Brighton! Ryan needed two attempts to fully gather the ball, but makes the save nonetheless.
6️⃣ minutes added...
There's an additional six minutes of stoppage time to find a winner here.
Adams close once more
Walker-Peters whips the ball in from the right, and it's spilled by Ryan with Adams lurking. He's not able to organise his feet in time to direct an effort on target.
Knocking on the door
Saints continuing to harass the Brighton defence, who are standing tall. Walker-Peters is the latest on the assault, but he's marshalled by Bissouma.
The moment Ings equalises 📸
Cool as you like from this man ❄️❄️❄️
Adams denied
Incisive passing from Saints. Lovely flick from Ings to find Adams, who shifts it and unleashes a fierce hit. Webster flew across to block the shot. Bodies on the line for the visitors.
Promising free-kick
Prowsey over it. Brighton lining up a five-man wall. Deflects behind for a corner after striking the wall.
Unlucky, Jannik!!
A wry smile from the defender following his strike, which Ryan acrobatically got fingertips to.
Bissouma blasts wide
The ball breaks kindly for the substitute, who shoots uncontested from the penalty spot but misses the target. A real let off for Saints, and a huge opportunity for the visitors.
VESTERGAARD THUNDERBOLT ⚡️
What an unbelievable save from Ryan. The defender unleashed a rocket from distance, but Ryan tips it onto the crossbar. Superb strike, matched by a superb save.
OUR GUY 🔥
Played in by Redmond our top scorer made no mistake. That makes it 20 Premier League goals for the season!
WHO ELSE?
One on one with Mat Ryan, Ings draws the goalkeeper in and slots it far corner. He doesn't miss from there!! Saints are level 😇
GOOOAL!!!
Danny Ings (66’) | 1 – 1
Prowsey free-kick
Superb delivery from the right, as always from the skipper, it's met by Ings at the near post but blocked by a host of bodies in green shirts.
Trossard denied
Højbjerg with a crucial block. Brighton looking second best this half, but that was a promising attack. Well defended in the end.
Better balance
The introduction of both Adams and Walker-Peters has injected a bit of energy into Saints and they look much more purposeful going forward. Ward-Prowse with the latest effort on goal, but it's tame.
Brilliant from Dunk
His anticipation is superb, and denies Saints a near-certain equaliser.
SOOOOO CLOSE 😩
A typical effort from Danny Ings, who cuts inside and smashes hit effort off the post. The rebound falls kindly to Adams but Dunk was on the goal line to prevent it crossing with his knee. Saints come forward again with Ings, but Adams is caught on his heels at the back post.
Fierce shot from Vokins
He's already scored on this stage - in the FA Cup - and it's a great effort to try and draw Saints level from distance. It fizzes marginally wide of the post, but has Ryan scrambling.
Back in midfield
Much more natural position for the Dane, who now parters Ward-Prowse. Saints already playing with better intensity.
Brighton counter
They had an overload for a brief moment, three coming forward against two Saints defenders. Walker-Peters uses his athleticism to recover well and intercept.
Up and running again...
Saints looking to assert some authority on this tie in the second period. Limited chances thus far. There's a double change at the break, Kyle Walker Peters and Ché Adams are on. Romeu and Obafemi have been withdrawn.
HALF-TIME: Saints 0-1 Brighton
Not the brightest half from the hosts, who go into the interval trailing. It was a huge shift at Old Trafford just three days prior, which appears to be telling at the moment.
Brighton end strongly
Good pressure from Trossard in midfield, gives Murray a sight of goal. Plenty of Saints bodies in the way to block the shot, which leads to a corner - McCarthy claims.
Triple corner
Prowsey delivers all. Brighton defending resolutely though, eventually getting the ball clear. Saints attempting to put the pressure on before the interval.
Last 5️⃣
Five minutes remain of the half, just as Redmond plays in Ings. Our red-hot striker puts the ball in the back of the net, but the flag is up. He gets another opportunity shortly after, but Dunk is the barrier.
Smallbone in action
Brighton have been the more purposeful side so far, but Saints attempting to reverse the momentum.
Maupay throws himself to the ground
The forward tries to force his way into the Saints box, under pressure from Højbjerg and Bednarek and then throws himself to the floor. Nothing doing, as the referee waves away any suggestion of a penalty.
Ings at St Mary's
Hasn't been presented with too much service as yet...
Saints wasteful in possession
Not really found any passing rhythm yet, and not managed to get Ings or Obafemi into the game much. Plenty of time, but we need to find another gear.
Brighton corner
Delivered by Trossard, but McCarthy took complete control and punched clear. Saints need to liven up a bit - strong goalkeeping from our #1.
DRINKS BREAK 💦
We've just entered the first-half drinks break. Poor goal to concede for Saints, but encouragingly, they are creating chances at the opposite end and there's plenty of time left in this one.
VISITORS LEAD
Clever finish from Maupay, who gives McCarthy no chance with the low shot. It was a simple routine from a throw-in, aided my some lapse Southampton defending, which gave the Frenchman a relatively easy chance to finish.
GOAL
Neal Maupay (17’) | 0 – 1

Trossard header
Comfortable again for McCarthy, who catches. Good battle developing between young Vokins and Lamptey down the right.
Flurry of chances
Saints went a host of chances to test Ryan. Prowsey with the initial effort from the edge of the area, which was charged down, before the follow up is fizzed at goal by Romeu and comes off Lamptey.
Speculative effort from Murray
No cause for concern for McCarthy, who is happy to watch the volley comfortably clear his bar.
Vokins making bow
The first images of tonight's Premier League debutant Jake Vokins, who is operating down the left flank.
Pröpper wasteful
Solly March did well down the left, crossing centrally, before the ball falls at the feet of the midfielder who was leaning back and fires over the bar.
COYR 😇
Some new faces tonight, but the same team spirit ❤️
Maupay double chance
Two bites at the cherry for the Brighton forward - the first one he fails to get a clean connection, but it falls nicely for him again as he blasts way over.
Yellow Card for Oriol Romeu (Southampton)
For a strong challenge on Solly March.
Højbjerg unleashes shot
A lovely cross-field pass from Romeu finds the Dane - who is actually filling in at right-back - and he takes it down on his chest and lashes at the effort. It's rebuffed by Ryan.
Obafemi draws the foul
But it's not given. Dunk pulled the youngster down, and it would have been in Prowsey territory, but referee is uninterested. Bright start from Saints, with both full-backs committing themselves forward.
PROWSEY gets us going...
Captain James Ward-Prowse gets us under way, but not before all 22 players take a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
PLAYERS ARE OUT 👊
Both sides have taken to the field and we're very nearly ready to get this show up and running!
