Saints beaten by Newcastle late show
Southampton suffered late heartache at Newcastle, as a second-half comeback from the hosts ended their unbeaten Premier League run and kept them in the bottom three. Our report.16.11
FULL-TIME: Newcastle 2-1 Saints
The hosts hold on to see out the win. Andy Carroll made the difference coming on, teeing up Jonjo Shelvey for the equaliser, before defender Federico Fernández netted the winner with three minutes of normal time remaining.
Hits the head of Longstaff. Calls for handball but the referee is uninterested. Superb run from Boufal to tee up the full-back.
Saints take it quickly, back to the Moroccan. Saints corner, taken once again by Ward-Prowse - the tenth of the match. Carroll heads clear.
On the verge
The hosts on the verge of securing all three points. Really harsh on Saints, who had chances to extend their lead before the equaliser. Into stoppage time..
The Argentinian followed in Sean Longstaff's shot, which McCarthy could only parry. It was the easiest of finishes from a few yards out.
Federico Fernández (87’) | 2 – 1
Won by Hayden, fairly lapse defending from Bertrand. Hanging on a knife edge here. Swung in by Shelvey and McCarthy punched to relieve the pressure.
A big final ten minutes here at St James' Park. Neither side look content holding on to a point. Both searching for a winner...
Saints go close again
Shane Long nearly latches on to Ingsy's glancing header. He's inches away from connecting, but the pace of the ball evades him.
Prowsey is on a great run of goalscoring form, so you can't blame him for trying. Wide of the box, he fizzes a free-kick towards goal but it's a yard wide.
Bertrand agonisingly close
Longy flicks the ball on from a corner, in exactly the same fashion as midweek, and Bertrand is arriving back post to connect. It arrives at him quickly and he can't control his header. Golden opportunity.
Prowsey free-kick blocked
The Newcastle wall does its job. Ings had won the initial free-kick in a dangerous position, but the angel was against Ward-Prowse. Out for a corner. Clash of heads from the corner, physios are on.
Shelvey heads the equaliser
Newcastle's top scorer in the Premier League this season heads home to restore parity. He latched on to Andy Carroll's cross.
Jonjo Shelvey (67’) | 1 – 1
Yellow Card for Cédric (Southampton)
A high boot catches Almiron.
Saints scramble the ball away after Manquillo's effort. McCarthy wasn't able to keep hold, but Højbjerg eventually cleared. The home side are pressing.
8️⃣ in 9️⃣ 🔥
Red hot Ings on target yet again for Saints. Can we hold onto this? 🤞
He's Newcastle's biggest threat, by far. Very tricky, he cuts inside of Cédric and shoots down the throat of McCarthy. Doesn't trouble the Saints stopper, but he's being allowed far too much space.
Cédric attempt well saved
It could have been two! Ball again very well worked towards Ings, who brings the full-back into play. He hits it first time, but again the Newcastle stopper blocks.
FIVE IN A ROW
HE'S AT IT AGAIN! Danny Ings has fired the hosts ahead!! Stephens plays a ball over the top towards the man of the moment, and he makes no mistake from there, firing past Dubravka.
Danny Ings (51’) | 0 – 1
The hosts have come out pumped for this second period. Looks like half time has done them good. Saints containing their threat for now.
HALF-TIME: Newcastle 0-0 Saints
Fairly pedestrian first period, bar the few chances for Saints. Redmond with the best of them, but we're goalless at the break.
Yellow Card for James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)
For a late challenge on Almirón.
Delivers from the left hand side, again cleared. Saints getting plenty of bodies in the box but unable to really connect with the ball. There's been chances aplenty in this half - visitors unlucky not to be ahead.
Now this is an image no defender or goalkeeper wants to see...
Hayden's cross watched and cleared by Bednarek. Corner is swung in by Shelvey, but again fielded well by Saints.
Another chance manufactured by Redmond. He could have taken the shot on himself, but played in Long instead. Fernández marshalled him well, turning behind for a Saints corner which Ings attacked with little purchase.
Clark header tame
He attacked the Newcastle corner, but it was comfortable for Alex McCarthy - who has had very little to do. Certainly less busier of the two goalkeepers thus far.
He's come closest!
Saints probing, but no breakthrough yet. Newcastle sitting deep, making it difficult to play through. This man has come closest to an opening.
He won the free-kick, and delivers with plenty of whip. No takers in red, but the ball is recycled by Ings. Resulting corner is headed away by Shelvey.
Excellent defensive recovery from Højbjerg, who was alert to the danger from a throw-in. It caught Saints unaware, but the captain was across to make the tackle inside the area - very well timed, and had to be.
Redderz shot saved
Again, the goalkeeper is equal to Redmond's effort. He's twice been denied in as many minutes. This time from a corner, as the ball broke to him inside the area, he fired on the half volley but Newcastle's stopper palmed to safety.
Nathan Redmond has the best opportunity of the game so far. It came from a Newcastle mistake, which Redmond pounced on. He sprinted towards goal, but one on one with Dubravka, couldn't find the finish.
We see you, Saints fans! Thank you to every single supporter who has made the trip up to St James' Park today! 👏
Saints piling the pressure on their hosts. Ings plays a neat one-two with Redmond, ball worked back to Højbjerg who crosses with little accuracy. The away side unafraid to commit bodies forward.
Credit goes to Ward-Prowse for the recovery. The winger had got past both Cédric and and Stephens but Prowsey is in the way to prevent the shot. Slightly desperate defending there, but effective nonetheless.
Cleared by Shelvey, but Saints are back on the attack. Shane Long surged into the box, gets to the byline and wants a corner as the ball diverts out of play. Referee points for a goal-kick. Bright start for the visitors.
Redmond on the break...
Danny Ings finds the wideman, roaming on the left. He motors down field, but is crowded out. Saints sustain the attack, forcing Newcastle to retreat. Eventually they clear...
Let's go Saints. We're off for our third Premier League clash of the week. The chance for another HUGE three points today...

Matchday in the northeast! 😇
Southampton travel to Newcastle United for their third instalment of Premier League action over the past eight days. Back-to-back home wins had lifted Ralph Hasenhüttl's side out of the drop zone temporarily, and another victory today could propel Saints as high as 14th. Newcastle, themselves on a good run of form, currently lie 11th, and were 2-0 victors over Sheffield United in the week. Stay tuned for all the build up to today's meeting at St James' Park...10.38
