17.48FULL TIME: Southampton 2-0 Huddersfield Town
A day to remember for the Academy! Southampton progress to the Emirates FA Cup fourth round thanks to goals from two of their own, Will Smallbone and Jake Vokins. The teenage duo struck early and late in the second half respectively in a game in which Saints were rarely troubled. Job done for Ralph Hasenhüttl, who made 10 changes but still saw his team extend their unbeaten run to five matches.
Long goes close!
The Irishman, denied by VAR in the first half, threatens to score again but this time his shot is deflected narrowly wide.
Into added time...
Saints are nearly there! Now for the clean sheet...
THAT'S BOTH OF THEM!!! ⚽️⚽️
Vokins joins fellow youngster Smallbone in finding the net! The left-back marks his home debut and his first senior start with a vicious strike from 20 yards that takes a slight deflection but flies in off the underside of the bar! What a day for the Academy 👏
GOOOAL!!!
Jake Vokins (86’) | 2 – 0
Ward-Prowse shoots wide
The midfielder latches on to Long's lay-off, but the ball was bouncing awkwardly towards his left foot and it's a difficult chance. He keeps it down, but it bobbles off target.
Important block from Cédric
That's the first chance Grant has had - Chalobah escapes down the right and crosses to the far post, where the striker takes the ball down on his chest and shoots, but it cannons against Cédric and behind for a corner, which Saints defend.
Stanković tries his luck
The ball drops to the defender 20 yards out, and he can't resist the urge to have a go. It's a pretty clean strike, but veers a couple of yards wide of Gunn's left-hand post.
Armstrong preparing to come on
It's all been a bit quiet here since the goal. Saints have got the lead they were searching for, but Huddersfield are still not prepared to commit many bodies forward, resulting in something of a stalemate. Ralph Hasenhüttl has turned to his bench and is ready to take action.
One for the scrapbook 📸
Goalscorer Will Smallbone celebrates scoring on his senior debut. The dream! We've reached the hour mark at St Mary's, where his goal is all that separates the sides.
What a chance for Schindler!
Huddersfield should be level. A fine delivery from the right from a free-kick finds captain Schindler on the six-yard line, but he can't adjust his body to divert the ball on target.
SMALLBONE SCORES ON HIS DEBUT!!!
What a moment for the 19-year-old! Danso crosses from the right and Long does brilliantly to keep the ball alive with an intelligent header back across goal. Smallbone shows his composure, waiting for it to drop and timing his strike perfectly on his left foot to bury the ball in the corner of the net from 12 yards! Get in!
GOOOAL!!!
Will Smallbone (46’) | 1 – 0
The visitors get us back under way
Saints were out early for the second half - Ralph Hasenhüttl will want to see more intensity from his team. Come on, lads!
HALF TIME: Southampton 0-0 Huddersfield Town
Boos around St Mary's at the break - not a reflection on Saints' performance, but dissent towards VAR, which intervened to deny the hosts an opener shortly before half time. Shane Long was ruled offside by a matter of millimetres from Will Smallbone's clever pass on his debut. Saints have certainly shaded it, but it has not been a classic, with chances at a premium at both ends.
VAR Decision: Goal awarded for Southampton [Shane Long] was cancelled
And it's been chalked off! Have to feel for Long, who is denied his first goal of the season, and Smallbone, who is denied an assist on his debut.
LONGY!!!
It's the opening goal for Saints! Smallbone's first-time pass releases the striker, who makes no mistake. But now VAR is checking a possible offside...
GOOOAL!!!
Shane Long (44’) | 1 – 0
Stanković receiving treatment
A bizarre incident here, as Stanković collides with his own player as Huddersfield prepared to deliver the free-kick that followed Long's yellow card. There's a bit of a break in play as the defender receives treatment, so there's likely to be a couple of added minutes before the interval.
Yellow Card for Shane Long (Southampton)
The striker goes into the book for an unintentional trip on Chalobah as he passed him.
Danso goes close!
The Austrian attacks a wonderful Ward-Prowse corner, but his header powers into the Saints fans behind Coleman's goal.
Huddersfield break again
The Terriers have hardly carried any threat, but on the rare occasions they have the opportunity to break, they do so at pace and in numbers. Hadergjonaj finds space on the right, but his cross seeking Bacuna at the far post is wayward.
Smallbone has a chance
That was a big moment for the debutant. Long's pressure forces an error for Coleman, whose clearance is pounced upon by Ward-Prowse, who releases Smallbone before Huddersfield are back in position. It opens up for the midfielder on his left foot, but that's not his strongest, and his shot is high and wide. Cue a rueful smile from the youngster.
Long penalised 😩
Danso attacks down the right and plays the ball inside for Long, who allows the pass to run across his body, but is penalised for a foul on defender Schindler as Boufal sticks the loose ball into the bottom corner to no avail.
Campbell goes close...
A rare counter-attack for the visitors, as O'Brien plays in Campbell - that's Fraizer Campbell, once of Manchester United and England. He takes the shot early, from 20 yards, and it whistles narrowly over the angle of post and bar.
Adams denied by Coleman!
A super burst down the left by Ward-Prowse, who does well to keep the ball in play and then drives at the Huddersfield defence, slipping the ball in behind for Adams, but he's forced wide on his left foot and his shot is comfortably stopped by keeper Coleman.
Vokins involved again
The 19-year-old looks confident out there. He takes a couple of touches to control a long pass out to the wing, but then delivers a peach of a cross, only for the incoming Danso to be penalised for climbing on his man.
Vestergaard goes down...
After Boufal's trickery wins Saints a free-kick, Ward-Prowse's delivery is in towards Vestergaard. The big defender goes down claiming a push and wants a penalty, but referee Tim Robinson isn't interested.
Huddersfield threaten for the first time
Campbell drives into the box and looks to pull the ball back across goal for Hadergjonaj, but Yoshida intercepts and Saints safely negotiate the visitors' first attack.
Boufal's pass is just overhit
This time the Moroccan picks up a pocket of space in the number 10 position, turns and threads the ball through the defence for Long, but out comes goalkeeper Coleman, who beats the Irishman to it.
A sight of goal for Smallbone!
First involvement for Boufal, who gets away down the left and crosses to the far post. Danso is there to nod the ball back across goal towards Smallbone, but it's just intercepted before he can make a connection from six yards.
Ward-Prowse sends Vokins on the run
The midfielder looks up and sends a raking diagonal pass for the youngster to chase, and he does well to dig out a first-time cross before the ball runs out of play.
A couple of early touches for Smallbone
The 19-year-old debutant looks neat and tidy in possession and happy to receive the ball in tight areas with a couple of sharp one-touch passes.
We're up and running!
Skipper James Ward-Prowse gets the action under way. Come on you Saints! 💪

The boss talks team selection! 🎥
It's been a very busy Christmas period for Saints, but 10 points from four games represented a handsome return for Ralph Hasenhüttl's men. Now the boss recognises the need to give some of those players a rest, whilst handing an opportunity to others to stake a claim...
