BUR vs SOU As It Happened
Key moments so far
- Saints trail 3-0 to Burnley at Turf Moor on the opening weekend
- Barnes (2) and Gudmundsson with all three goals in 12 second-half minutes
- Adams goes close to early opener from Valery's cross, before Redmond is denied by Pope
- Wood scores for Burnley, but the flag is raised and VAR agrees, so the goal is ruled out
FULL TIME: Burnley 3-0 Southampton
It's all over at Turf Moor, where Saints were well beaten in the end. Burnley did all the damage in 12 second-half minutes, as Ashley Barnes scored twice and Johann Berg Gudmundsson added a third. Saints were at least on par with their hosts for an hour, but that horror spell ultimately scuppered any chance of claiming a result on the opening weekend.
3️⃣ added minutes
We're into stoppage time at Turf Moor.
Bednarek fires over
Saints are still pushing for a goal, but Bednarek's shot from Ward-Prowse's low corner is not going to trouble Pope.
Vestergaard goes close
The defender gets his toe to the ball in a crowded penalty area, but Pope saves with his legs to preserve his clean sheet.
Barnes denied his hat-trick
The striker profits from a stray pass by Højbjerg and rounds Gunn, but the keeper gets back to turn his shot wide from a narrow angle. This second half has been well short of Saints' expectations.
Gudmundsson makes it three...
Gudmundsson nicks the ball off the toe of Bertrand and surges into the box. He has Barnes in support, hat-trick hunting, but goes himself with a delicious curling shot inside the far post. Looking like game over now.
GOAL
Johann Berg Gudmundsson (74’) | 3 – 0

2️⃣0️⃣ minutes to salvage something...
Two goals in seven minutes have put Burnley firmly in charge of this game. What can Saints produce to find a way back into it?
It's another one 😤
Barnes is on target again, this time guiding home a fine cross from debutant Pieters. It's a long way back from here...
GOAL
Ashley Barnes (69’) | 2 – 0

Barnes breaks the deadlock
It's a poor goal to concede for Saints. Vestergaard misjudges a high ball and allows Barnes to steal in. The striker doesn't hesitate in crashing a low shot through the legs of Gunn to open the scoring.
GOAL
Ashley Barnes (63’) | 1 – 0

Redmond off target
Another half-chance for Saints. Ings rolls the ball to his left for Redmond, who tries to open up his body and curl one inside the far post, but he doesn't quite get it right and the ball sails high and wide.
Rodriguez warming up...
Former Saint Jay Rodriguez, back at his hometown club, is limbering up and preparing for his second Burnley debut. Which manager will make the first move?
Just over!
In the end Bertrand strikes it, with the angle favouring a left footer, but his shot just whistles over the angle of post and bar. Unlucky.
Free-kick in JWP territory 🎯
More quick footwork from Redmond earns a free-kick right on the edge of the box. Ward-Prowse, Bertrand and Redmond stand over it...
Pieters fires over
A speculative attempt from the Burnley left-back. Nothing ahead of him, so he goes for goal from a long way out, but it sails harmlessly over.
We're back under way!
The second half is up and running. Will one goal decide this game?
HALF TIME: Burnley 0-0 Southampton
It's not been a thrilling start to the new season for Saints, but Ralph Hasenhüttl will be happy enough with how his team have contained their hosts. Both teams need to offer more in attack, but Saints have carried the greater threat, with Ché Adams going close early on and Nathan Redmond forcing a fine save from Nick Pope shortly before the interval.
3️⃣ added minutes...
We're into first-half stoppage time at Turf Moor. The added minutes are mainly due to VAR, you'd assume.
Brilliant work from Redmond!
Best piece of play of the game - Redmond chases Romeu's pass and just keeps it in. He faces up a defender, beats him on the inside and rifles a shot towards the top corner that's superbly tipped over by goalkeeper Pope. More of that please, Saints!
it's a very studied build-up from southampton. they've been very neat and tidy, but haven't done enough to make that possession count.

🔟 minutes until half time...
It's still goalless at Turf Moor, where clear chances have been few and far between. Can Danny Ings make the breakthrough against his former club?
Wood's touch lets him down
A clever pass behind the Saints' defence sees Wood get ahead of Vestergaard, but his touch is heavy and runs through to Gunn. The Burnley man was actually flagged offside in any case.
Adams catches Mee...
It's a bad tackle from the striker, which leaves Mee in some pain. VAR intervenes again, but Adams escapes without a card.
Gudmundsson goes close 😬
The Icelandic winger finds a yard of space to let fly on his favoured left foot from the edge of the box. It arrows towards the bottom corner and beats the diving Gunn, but whistles just wide - much to Saints' relief.
Burnley coming into the game
It was a bright start from Saints, who were definitely quicker to settle, but Burnley are starting to enjoy more possession and territory now. Wood tries his luck with an overhead kick - misses the ball completely, but Saints can expect plenty more crosses into the box to defend.
Wood goal ruled out by VAR
A let-off for Saints, as Ashley Barnes capitalises on a slip from Jack Stephens and rolls the ball across goal for Chris Wood to score, but the flag goes up. VAR is called upon to inspect the footage, which proves the initial on-field decision correct. Phew!
Ward-Prowse tries his luck
A lovely clean strike from James Ward-Prowse - who captains the side today - as the ball breaks his way outside the box, but it's straight at Nick Pope, who pats it down and holds on.
Adams wins early corner
The striker has been razor-sharp in pre-season, particularly early in games, and that trend is continuing today. He turns Ben Mee to win a corner, from which Oriol Romeu fires the loose ball over the bar from 20 yards.
Adams goes close!
First chance for Saints - Valery's cross from the right leaves Adams stretching at the far post. The debutant tries to get his right foot around the ball to hook it back in, but can't find the angle. Promising start!

12.4612.20i think we had a good fundamental basis last season and built it up, and we now try to improve a few steps: to play quicker in front, to minimise risk, and not to give goals away so easily. the pre-season games were positive, which is nice to see, but nobody knows exactly how good we are. now it's about getting results.
