Report: Saints inflict more pain on Cherries
Danny Ings and Ché Adams were on target to heap more pain on Bournemouth, as Southampton left their south coast neighbours three points and four goals adrift of safety. Our report.16.27
FULL-TIME: Bournemouth 0-2 Saints
A really good away performance from the boys in white, with goals from Ché Adams and Danny Ings.
THAT SEALS IT!
Lovely feet from Ryan Bertrand down the left, he finds Obafemi and the substitute works the ball to Adams who smashes emphatically past Ramsdale.
Ché Adams (+9’) | 0 – 2
VAR Decision: Goal not awarded for Bournemouth [Sam Surridge] was confirmed
It's cancelled out, as Wilson was offside in the build up.
Bournemouth level late
VAR is checking, but Surridge looks to have equalised.
Sam Surridge (+4’) | 1 – 1
Yellow Card for James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)
Wilson curled an effort which was destined for the far corner, but McCarthy got down exceptionally well and at full stretch pushes around the post. Five minutes of stoppage time to be played.
Caution to the wind
Bournemouth throwing everything at this and have five strikers on the pitch. Saints defending resolutely at the moment, as we enter stoppage time.
Vestergaard block 👊
Superb defending from the big Dane, who threw his body on the line to block Sokanke's route to goal.
Saints maintain control
They really should be out of sight by now. Plenty of attacking intent on the break.
A wonderful free-flowing move from Saints leads to a chance for Redmond, he's 1v1 with Ramsdale and the goalkeeper guesses right to save. Redmond opened his body up and perhaps made his intentions too obvious.
Wilson guides header into side-netting
Difficult effort to direct with no real pace on the cross. Half a chance for the visitors who are searching for the equaliser.
Vital toe from Billing
Adams was winding up the shot before Billing nipped in a stole the ball. Saints win a corner as a result but again can't make it pay.
Crucial cover from Walker-Peters
Solanke looked to have escaped the offside trap and was charging towards goal before Walker-Peters pokes the ball away from him, at the expense of a corner, which amounts to nothing.
Let's see this one out, Saints! Chances to kill off the game have come and went, but we continue to lead thanks to a Danny Ings strike.
Saints on the assault
They break again, following a Bournemouth free-kick. Walker-Peters led the charge this time around and worked the ball to Redmond but the home side had covering defenders and snuffed out the danger.
Lovely feet from Walker-Peters
Draws the foul and takes the pressure off Saints. Little drag back fooled his opposition number.
Armstrong leads the break
So much desire from the Scot, as he motors over the halfway line and releases Redmond. He gets it back, and tries to bend a shot in the far corner. A yard wide of the target.
Stay strong, Saints 👊
Working hard to contain the hosts.
Another superb stop
Top reactions from McCarthy as he denies Wilson. The space really opened up for the Bournemouth winger and he side-footed the shot but McCarthy was equal to it.
Ings took on penalty taking duty, looking for his second of the game, but it's saved by Ramsdale! Unlucky.
VAR Decision: Penalty awarded for Southampton was confirmed
Wilson handles the ball in the box and Ings steps up to take the resulting penalty!
Prowsey denied by Ramsdale
It needed the fingertips of Ramsdale to prevent that one going in, tipping it around the post. Ward-Prowse takes, Romeu meets it and flicks off Harry Wilson's hand. It's a clear shout for a penalty...
Free-kick in a promising position
Rico lofts it into the box, but it's got far too much height on it and McCarthy will claim.
Superb goalkeeping 👏
McCarthy is alive to the danger as Wilson attempts to get onto an incisive pass, and beats the striker to it to avert the danger.
Armstrong effort deflected
Saints looking very dangerous around Bournemouth's box. Armstrong takes the shot on, and it's blocked. Prowsey corner ensues, which Vestergaard attacks through a crowd of defenders. Case for a corner, but goal-kick given.
Yellow Card for Philip Billing (Bournemouth)
For a late challenge on Romeu.
Ings fires narrowly wide
Billing challenged Romeu late, but the referee plays the advantage, and to Saints' benefit as Ings picks up the ball and strikes it well. It ends up inches away from goal, great effort and indicative of the confidence of our top scorer.
Back at it 👊
A big second half coming your way!
HALF-TIME: Bournemouth 0-1 Saints
It's that man again that gives Saints the lead. He loves playing in white - scoring in each of the three times Saints have worn their third strip.
His 21st Premier League strike of the season. Take a bow Danny Ings.
Danny Ings cuts inside, teed up by Redmond, and it's a beautifully curled finish into the far corner. Left Ramsdale with no chance, and Saints go into the lead.
Danny Ings (41’) | 0 – 1
NEVER. STOPS. RUNNING.
Yellow Card for Jannik Vestergaard (Southampton)
For a challenge on Wilson.
Chaos in the box
Succession of corners for the hosts, Lerma looked to get his head on it but didn't connect. Eventually McCarthy takes control of the situation and catches to relieve the pressure.
Brilliant play down the right from King, and he fizzes a cross towards Wilson in the box. Walker-Peters recovers to make a crucial interception - somehow stopping the ball from reaching its target, as well as avoiding his own net.
Defence into attack
Prowsey with a free header centrally, well found by Romeu. It's a beautifully flighted pass from the Spaniard and a well timed run, but he didn't get enough power on it. Very presentable chance.
DRINKS BREAK 💦
Time to take some water on board. Very open first quarter, with both sides having chances. Bournemouth simplifying their game, pumping the ball forward quickly and attempting to put the Saints backline under pressure.
His work rate is relentless. He chases down Steve Cook and wins the ball, but the referee gives a foul. Looked soft. Saints pressing high though and looking to force mistakes.
Stephens looking strong at the back on his return to the side.
Wonderful vision from Prowsey
Redmond had timed his run perfectly, and the Saints captain found him. Ramsdale was quick off his line and just beat the winger to the ball. Saints going close.
Clumsy from Vestergaard
Saints get turned, Bournemouth playing the long ball over the top. Wilson outpaced the Saints centre-half and lured Vestergaard in, drawing the foul. Promising position for Bournemouth, headed away by Ings.
Searching ball from Armstrong
Long was on the move, always a willing runner, but there was two covering defenders and he's unable to gather it in his strike. Meanwhile, VAR is looking at a push from Stephens on King in the box. Check over and nothing given.
Stanislas provides the chance
Wilson again is the target and he gets his head on it. Guides the ball, but it sails comfortably over the bar.
It was a fantastic ball from the left, with Wilson baring down on goal. The cross had a little too much pace on it, and evades the striker. Another corner follows, ball falls to Kelly on the edge of the area and gets a deflection on the way through.
Wild from Rico
Plenty of power behind the shot from the full-back, but very little direction. Alex McCarthy happy to watch it wide.
Wilson forces his way into the box
Stephens concedes a corner, thwarting the Bournemouth forward. Vestergaard meets the delivery and heads away.
All in white today!
Saints straight on the attack, as Ings wins a corner. It's delivered by Prowsey, plenty of takers in the middle. Short melee before the ball is cleared. Obvious intent from the away side.
