Anderson double sinks Saints

Southampton were denied a third straight Premier League victory by a second-half turnaround inspired by the Brazilian magic of Felipe Anderson at St Mary’s. Read our report here.

21.55

FULL-TIME: Saints 1-2 West Ham

A frustrating evening for the home side, who took the lead early in the second period through Nathan Redmond. But a quick-fire double from Felipe Anderson, who was a threat all evening, stole the points for West Ham - who move into the top half of the table.

4️⃣ minutes added...

Saints have four additional minutes to make an impact on the scoreline.

88’

Anderson at it again

The forward has been a threat all game, as he rounds Yan Valery and forces a good save from McCarthy at his near post. The corner is cleared with ease by Long, but it's eating into our time.

86’

Southampton substitution: Mohamed Elyounoussi replaces Mario Lemina

Final change for Saints.

82’

Yellow Card for Jan Bednarek (Southampton)

81’

Immediate impact

Austin holds his man off in the box, before working an angle for the shot. It's charged down, but nearly falls to Redmond, before Fabianski is able to claim.

80’

Austin enters the fray

He's scored twice in his past three appearances. The striker replaces Maya Yoshida, as Saints revert to a 4-4-2 for the final 10 minutes.

79’

Southampton substitution: Charlie Austin replaces Maya Yoshida

We're into the final 10, very attacking change for Saints...

Targett a threat

Targett continues to deliver from the left, but no takers. Saints are threatening, chasing down this deficit, but no joy yet. The latest effort, another low cross, is again cleared.

75’

What a save that is...

Mario Lemina was in one on one with Fabianski, and the goalkeeper claws away the his shot at full stretch. Redmond was involved in the build up, and was incidentally offside.

68’

Long released down the right

Armstrong, whose range of passing has been impressive tonight, swept the ball brilliantly into the path of the Irishman, but he didn't have the support to continue the move. West Ham break with Anderson, who slid the ball towards Pérez, but the shot is charged down well by Vestergaard.

64’

Targett cross

Wonderful delivery from the left from the full-back, fizzed low, with an onrushing Shane Long stretching to get something on it. He doesn't, but Saints have a corner - which Fabianski catches.

61’

Southampton substitution: Shane Long replaces Danny Ings

First change of the night for the hosts.

Anderson doubles his tally

That's three goals in the space of eight second-half minutes. A quick break from the visitors pays dividends, as Antonio releases Anderson, with a West Ham overload down the right, and he fires emphatically past the onrushing McCarthy for the lead.

Armstrong curler

It's livening up now! The midfielder worked the ball in-field, spotted goal from 20 yards, and bent an effort towards Fabianski's top right. The Hammers stopper was equal to it, with an acrobatic save.

Anderson equaliser

As quickly as Saints had themselves in front, the visitors are level. Anderson from distance, drove the ball low into McCarthy's right corner, before the stopper could react.

GET INNNNN

Nathan Redmond puts us ahead! Oriol Romeu's shot had been fumbled, and the Saints winger was quickest to react, forcing the ball - and himself - over the line.

Redmond get us under way...

We're back for the second half here at St Mary's, greeted by a big roar from the Saints faithful! 🎼

No changes to either side...

HALF-TIME: Saints 0-0 West Ham

Goalless at the break. There was chances for both sides to break the deadlock, but neither able to as the first 45 minutes draws to a close. Saints enjoying the best of the possession, but will need a bit more creativity in the final third to break down an organised West Ham side!

Lively end to the half

Edging towards the break now. Michail Antonio's latest effort was blocked by his own man, while Saints went down the other end and had a chance with Ings in the area, who couldn't get the ball out of his feet in time to find the run of Redmond. West Ham broke, but Snodgrass curled his effort wide, off balance.

Romeu influence

Neat work in midfield from Romeu, he won the ball, drew the foul, but carried on regardless as the ball was worked to Targett. Deep left-footed cross from the full-back, which was awkwardly cleared high, as Danny Ings was manhandled in the area. Nothing given.

Valery threat

Another solid half hour from the young wing-back, who is being encouraged to get forward often. The latest opportunity, a wide pass from Redmond, was slightly weighty. But the teenager is giving Cresswell something to think about.

Armstrong beats Cresswell

The midfielder skips past Cresswell on the right, taking over from Yan Valery, and sends the ball deep towards the back post run of Matt Targett, who gets beaten in the air. Both sides creating.

23’

Huge chance!

The overlapping run of Cresswell down the left caught Saints out, and he squared the ball accurately to the feet of Lucas Pérez, who took a touch, before fumbling the shot and watching it trickle wide. Very presentable chance, central, eight yards from goal.

20’

Armstrong effort

Good build up play from the hosts, who were patient, working the ball from left to right. Armstrong cut inside, worked it onto his left foot, and tried to bend it into the far corner. Few yards wide in the end.

18’

First spell of pressure

The visitors are beginning to offer threat now. Felipe Anderson whipped the ball into the area, which was met by the head of Grady Diangana, but the ball rather glanced off his head. No direction or power in the effort. Snodgrass then tried his luck from distance, but McCarthy claimed.

12’

Good passage

Saints keeping the ball confidently, always looking to drive forward. The front three look to be linking well. Still no clear sights of goal, but the home side on top here.

8’

Two corners wasted

The visitors had two corners in quick succession, neither particularly effective. Jan Bednarek clears the danger, and Saints reclaim possession.

6’

Big tackle from Romeu 💪

That'll get the fans going! Our captain puts in a big challenge on Diop, and wins the ball cleanly. West Ham come again down the right. But Matt Targett is in charge of the situation.

3’

Ings pokes wide

Another opening inside the first couple of minutes! Danny Ings had wriggled free in the box, evading two challenges, before poking the ball into the side netting. Plenty of purpose in Saints' play during these opening exchanges.

High press 😅

Saints straight on the chase, looking full of energy. Stuart Armstrong fed the ball wonderfully through to Matt Targett, on the move. Who squared it to Redmond, but the shot was straight at Fabianksi, who saved. Decent move, though!
