Key moments so far

  • It finishes 1-1 at St Mary's as Kane cancels out Sanchez own goal
  • Pellegrino's men take the lead as Bertrand's cross is turned into his own net by Sanchez
  • Kane equalises with simple header from a corner after Dier strikes the post for Spurs
  • Teenage debutant Obafemi comes on and has chance to win it for Saints

FULL TIME: Southampton 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur

A really entertaining game here at St Mary's ends in a draw and it's probably a fair result. Saints' first-half lead did not last long after Davinson Sanchez put through his own net, as familiar nemesis Harry Kane soon headed Spurs level. Both sides pushed for a second-half winner, but it wasn't to be despite great chances for both late on - including Saints' 17-year-old debutant Michael Obafemi.

High and wide from Wanyama

The former Saint saw his name up in lights, but it's a wild decision to shoot from 35 yards and the strike is harmless.

Five added minutes signalled

This has been an engrossing spectacle. We're into added time and you would not bet against a late winner.

Kane goes close

A heart-in-mouth moment for Saints, as Alli finds Kane in the box. It's on his left foot but you would back the striker to score - instead he pulls his shot wide of the far post.

Boufal shot blocked

Another great chance as Saints get in behind down the right flank again. This time the ball is pulled back to Boufal with time on his side, but the Moroccan takes a touch and bodies converge on him - his eventual shot is blocked.

Great chance for Obafemi!

A slick move from Saints sees Tadić find space on the right. His low cross picks out the unmarked Obafemi, but the ball just skips up in front of the youngster and he doesn't get a substantial touch on it. What a moment that might have been.

Tottenham Hotspur substitution: Victor Wanyama replaces Mousa Dembélé

Final change for Spurs, as Wanyama enters the fray to a mixed reception from his former supporters.

Brilliant block by Stephens

Some intricate play from Spurs sees Kane find Sissoko in the box. His cutback picks out Lamela, who seems certain to score until Stephens intervenes with a crucial block. To add to Spurs' frustration, a goal kick is awarded.

Obafemi replaces Gabbiadini

It's a third and final throw of the dice for Pellegrino. Obafemi has eight minutes plus stoppage time! Could it happen?

Here comes Obafemi...

The 17-year-old is stripped and ready to come on.

Southampton substitution: Steven Davis replaces Mario Lemina

It's a like for like change in the Saints midfield as Davis comes on for Lemina.

Yellow Card for Kieran Trippier (Tottenham Hotspur)

Another Spurs player goes into the book. The visitors are getting increasingly frustrated here - they need three points just as much as Saints.

Yellow Card for Mousa Dembélé (Tottenham Hotspur)

Hoedt plays a nice pass down the left channel for Bertrand, who marauds forward and gets blocked off by Dembélé. It's a free kick in a good position near the left corner of the box.

Tottenham Hotspur substitution: Kieran Trippier replaces Serge Aurier

Second change for Spurs. Aurier was down injured and cannot continue, so on comes Trippier at right-back.

2️⃣0️⃣ minutes to go!

Who can make themselves a hero? We're into the last 20 minutes...

Tottenham Hotspur substitution: Erik Lamela replaces Heung-Min Son

It's a straight swap for Spurs, as the in-form Son is sacrificed.

Vertonghen shoots wide

After a scramble in the Saints penalty area the ball is cleared to Vertonghen, who strides out of defence and lets fly from 30 yards, but it was always going wide.

Crucial block from Stephens

Kane takes a touch on to his left foot inside the box and shoots, but Stephens gets a vital touch to deflect it away for a corner, which Saints clear.

Gabbiadini tries his luck

Gabbiadini pounces on a loose ball and takes a shot from 20 yards, but Vorm is equal to it. It's a fairly routine save in the end.

Southampton substitution: Sofiane Boufal replaces Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

On comes Saints' unpredictable playmaker. What can Boufal produce today? It's an attack-minded change.

Alli fires wide

Space opens up in front of Alli, who needs no second invitation to shoot from 25 yards. It's a clean connection, but just skims inches wide of McCarthy's right-hand upright.

Kane misses on the volley

Davies's corner finds its way through to Kane at the far post, but for once his timing is off. He attempts an ambitious volley and misses the ball completely.

Yellow Card for Oriol Romeu (Southampton)

Romeu slides in and catches Alli. He joins Stephens and Sissoko in the book.

Yellow Card for Moussa Sissoko (Tottenham Hotspur)

It's a booking for Sissoko. Bertrand rather sucked him in, waiting until the last minute to offload the ball as the Spurs man steamed in just too late.

He's back on 🙌

No long-term damage for the midfielder - he's fit to continue.

Lemina receiving treatment

The physio is on while the Saints man is down and in some discomfort.

Saints apply pressure

Tadić leads a Saints attack, twice crossing from the left. The second of those finds Cédric, but Spurs eventually clear after an uncomfortable spell for the visitors.

Alli cross causes problems

Alli crosses dangerously from the right and it requires urgent action from Stephens, who slices his clearance to safety, but it gets the job done.

Ward-Prowse denied by Vorm

Højbjerg bursts forward from midfield and feeds Ward-Prowse, who shoots early with defenders retreating. He hits it well, but Vorm gets down to his left to make a smothering save.

Yellow Card for Jack Stephens (Southampton)

Stephens is penalised for holding back Kane and becomes the first player to enter the referee's notebook.

Spurs get us back under way

We're up and running again at St Mary's. Come on, lads! 💪

See the best of the action from the first half 📸

Here are the best of the images from our club photographer, who was on hand to capture all the key moments from an entertaining first period here at St Mary's.

HALF TIME: Southampton 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur

It's level at the interval. Saints' lead did not last long, as Davinson Sanchez put through his own net from Ryan Bertrand's low cross, before Harry Kane pounced to head home a corner. Since then Spurs have shaded it, but Saints still carry a threat on the break. A big second half awaits!

One added minute

There will be one extra minute in this first half at St Mary's, where it's still all square.

Lemina tests Vorm

After McCarthy does well to hold on to Dier's low shot, Lemina forces Vorm to make a similar save. It's tough for the goalkeepers out there in driving rain with a very skiddy pitch.

Just wide from Stephens!

Ward-Prowse delivers a typically accurate set-piece on to the head of Stephens, who gets a great connection but sends his header fractionally wide of the far post with Vorm rooted to the spot.

Sissoko goes close

It's a let-off for Saints, as Davies fizzes in a cross at an awkward height that Sissoko can only turn wide from close range. Anything on target from there would have beaten goalkeeper McCarthy.

Lemina shoots high and wide

Tadić tees up Lemina to strike, but the midfielder shoots off target as his rising drive sails into the away fans behind Vorm's goal.

Kane draws Tottenham level

The lead does not last long. After Dier's warning shot strikes the woodwork, Kane rises unmarked to head home a Davies corner. All too simple from a Saints point of view.

Dier strikes the post

Spurs threaten to hit back immediately, as Dier finds space in the box and thunders a shot against the base of the post.

Saints are in front!

Bertrand gets to the byeline and crosses low to the near post, where Sanchez has to deal with it but only succeeds in turning the ball past his own goalkeeper via the foot of the post. What a start!

Davinson Sánchez (14’) | 1 0

Spurs threaten for the first time

It's been a subdued start from Tottenham. After Højbjerg fails to apply any touch from a low Tadić cross, Davies gets forward for the visitors and delivers a dangerous ball headed behind for a corner by Hoedt. It did not miss the far post by much.

Ward-Prowse shoots wide

Again Saints are on the front foot. Ward-Prowse tries his luck from 30 yards with a shot that veers away from goal, but it's another sign of intent from a determined home team.

Saints on the attack again...

Ward-Prowse wins the ball in midfield and finds Tadić with a raking diagonal pass. The Serbian looks for Gabbiadini with a low cross, but the striker fails to get any contact on the ball and Vorm claims just in front of the onrushing Højbjerg.

Gabbiadini has an early chance!

The striker has the first shot on goal inside the first 15 seconds. Turning on the edge of the box, the Italian lets fly with a dipping strike that bounces up in front of Vorm and forces an awkward save from the stand-in Spurs stopper.

Saints get us under way

We're up and running at St Mary's!
