Neat footwork from Christian Atsu gifted Matt Ritchie a chance on goal. The effort deflected wide, and the preceding corner was cleared.

The fullback cut inside well, marshalled by Florian LeJeune, but rather scuffed his shot a yard wide of the target.
Ayoze Perez with Newcastle's second
Seconds after Gabbiadini had scored at one end, Perez had restored Newcastle's lead at the other. His effort squeezed beneath Forster and in to the far corner from a tight angle.

Ryan Bertrand and Nathan Redmond link well, before the ball is worked to Dusan Tadic in the technical area. Eventual shot is deflected for a corner, which comes to nothing.
Yoshida upended
The centre-half goes down briefly, holding his back. But is now on his feet, no need for medical attention.
Long shot blocked
Saints with a man over, as Shane Long attempts to get his side back on level pegging. Newcastle defend well, and hold on to their narrow lead.

Maya Yoshida in unfamiliar territory, whips a cross in to the six yard area. Shane Long is arriving, but can't connect. Shelvey eventually clears.
Redmond Saints' danger man
Saints trail to an Isaac Hayden goal, but Nathan Redmond has looked to create down the left, and has been our biggest threat in the opening quarter.
van Dijk heads wide
Saints are straight down the other end, trying to atone for conceding an early lead. Redmond delivers a corner, met by Virgil van Dijk, who heads agonisingly wide.

Forster caught hesitating
Ayoze Perez's pace catches Fraser Forster unaware, as the striker nearly nicks the ball away from the Saints 'keeper. A brief spell of Newcastle pressure has followed.
Tadic heads over
Saints on the attack once more. Redmond stands the ball up at the back post, where it is met by Tadic. The Serb heads over, but had a clear sight of goal.
Redmond the outlet
Oriol Romeu finds Redmond on the left, who is a constant option, but perhaps lacks support. Ball is worked well to Dusan Tadic, but the shot is fired disappointingly over.
Perez advancing
Ayoze Perez is released down the right, forces a corner off Virgil van Dijk, which Mario Lemina gets a head to. Atsu with the eventual shot, which Fraser Forster looked to have covered.
Cedric on the move
Cedric links well with Dusan Tadic, but the move breaks down. Saints pressing well, and most of the play is in their attacking half.
Atsu tries to create
Ball is swept out to Christian Atsu in the left channel, surrounded by Saints shirts. No danger, but Newcastle gaining some possession now.
