FUL vs SOU As It Happened

Key moments so far

  • Southampton victorious at Fulham in the Emirates FA Cup third round
  • Ward-Prowse scores the only goal on the half-hour
  • Stephens hits the bar with golden chance to make it 2-0
  • Saints progress to the fourth round for the seventh time in nine seasons

FULL TIME: Fulham 0-1 Southampton

Saints are through! James Ward-Prowse scores the only goal of the game after 29 minutes at Craven Cottage to send Saints into round four of the Emirates FA Cup. Well done, lads! 😇

Gabbiadini blazes over

Great chance to settle it! Gabbiadini releases Redmond, who finds Lemina in the box. Lemina's backheel sits up perfectly for the Italian to hit first time, but he gets it all wrong and shoots well over the crossbar.

Four added minutes...

Time to dig in, boys!

Norwood heads wide

Sessegnon has been a constant outlet for Fulham down the left. Another of his crosses is this time attacked by Norwood, but he cannot hit the target.

Fulham pushing for an equaliser...

Saints are defending deep now. Fulham haven't created anything clear-cut, but Saints are hanging on a little. We'll find out shortly how many minutes will be added on for stoppage time.

Southampton substitution: Manolo Gabbiadini replaces Shane Long

Third and final change for Mauricio Pellegrino. It's a like for like swap up front, as Gabbiadini replaces the tireless Long.

Sponsored by Utilita

Can you get any closer? 😨

Jack Stephens watches on as his close-range header beats goalkeeper David Button, but somehow stays out via the underside of the crossbar. We're into the last ten minutes at Craven Cottage, where Saints still lead 1-0.

Southampton substitution: Mario Lemina replaces Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

Straight swap in the Saints midfield, as Lemina comes on for Højbjerg, who produced a typically industrious performance.

Sponsored by Utilita

Odoi shoots over

McCarthy punches a free kick in a crowded penalty area only to Odoi, but he can't keep his shot down and it flies into the stand. Another half-chance for the hosts.

Fulham substitution: Aboubakar Kamara replaces Rui Pedro da Rocha Fonte

In-form striker Kamara comes on to roars from the home fans, who are desperate for an equaliser.

Sponsored by Utilita

Stephens hits the bar! 😩

That should have been 2-0. Ward-Prowse finds Long with a corner to the near post, which is flicked on to the far post where Stephens just needs to hit the target, but he heads against the underside of the crossbar from four yards and it somehow stays out.

Ojo shoots off target

Substitute Ojo gets in behind the Saints defence, but elects to shoot from a virtually impossible angle and fires well over the bar. Teammates, unsurprisingly, felt a cross was the better option.

Yellow Card for Jan Bednarek (Southampton)

Bednarek is the first Saints player to be carded after a strong challenge on Kebano.

Southampton substitution: Nathan Redmond replaces Sofiane Boufal

First change of the day for Saints, as Redmond's fresh legs come on for Boufal, who was a constant threat with his trickery.

Sponsored by Utilita

Bertrand fires over

Saints are awarded a free kick in an inviting position 25 yards out. Bertrand and Ward-Prowse stand over it and the defender goes for goal, but it's over the bar and never threatened to dip in time to trouble Button.

Great chance for Piazon!

Fredericks crosses low from the right and it runs all the way through to Piazon at the far post. Maybe the Brazilian wasn't expecting it to reach him, but he completely misses the ball with his attempted shot and Saints survive their biggest scare to date.

Fulham substitution: Oluwaseyi Ojo replaces Tomas Kalas

Another attacking change for Fulham, who this time sacrifice a defender for Ojo, who is a winger.

Sponsored by Utilita

So close!

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg thought he had doubled Saints' lead in the second half, only to be denied by an important save from Fulham keeper David Button. It remains a slender advantage in favour of the visitors at Craven Cottage.

Well wide from Long

Davis peels away to the corner of the penalty area to nod down a diagonal ball to Long, who shoots first time, but the ball slices away off the inside of his foot and disappears a long way wide of Button's goal.

McCarthy makes his first save

It's taken over an hour, but McCarthy finally has a save to make. Sessegnon's cross from the left is collected at the far post by Johansen, who exchanges passes with Norwood and shoots low, but it's a fairly simple one for McCarthy, who stoops to gather.

Fulham substitution: Neeskens Kebano replaces Kevin McDonald

First change of the day is made by the home side, as the more attack-minded Kebano replaces McDonald.

Sponsored by Utilita

Boufal shoots over

Boufal picks up possession 30 yards from goal, sizes up his options and lets fly from distance. He hits it well but it's always rising, and it's a couple of yards too high.

So close to 2-0!

Højbjerg bursts forward from midfield, finds Long to his right and continues his run. The Irishman picks out the Dane in the box, who takes a touch and shoots with his second, only to be denied from close range by the sprawling Button, who left him with little to aim at.

Ward-Prowse denied by Button

The goalscorer stands over the free kick and goes for goal from an improbable angle, but Button is able to make a straightforward save.

Yellow Card for Kevin McDonald (Fulham)

Long races away from McDonald, who thought he could get there before the Saints man and brings him down. It's the first booking of the game.

Back under way!

Fulham have kicked off and we're up and running again for the second half. Keep it going, Saints! 💪

HALF TIME: Fulham 0-1 Southampton

That's half time at Craven Cottage, which comes at a good time from a Saints point of view with Fulham suddenly building a bit of momentum for the first time. Saints have been dominant for the most part and deservedly lead through James Ward-Prowse's first goal of the season - gobbling up a loose ball to drive home a low left-footed shot from 15 yards.

Ream heads over

Sessegnon whips in a free kick from the right and Ream climbs highest to meet it, but cannot keep his header down from eight yards and it flies into the massive Saints contingent behind McCarthy's goal.

Important clearance from Bertrand

Sessegnon goes down the left and stands up a cross with white shirts steaming in at the far post, but Bertrand gets himself in just the right place to head the ball behind for a corner. Then Johansen sees a low shot blocked as Fulham enjoy their best spell of the game late in the first half.

Boufal looking sharp

Lovely feet from the Moroccan, who skips away from two tackles on the halfway line but not from McDonald, who brings him down. It's a free kick but no booking for the Fulham man.

Bednarek goes down injured

Saints already have three defenders missing in Cédric, Hoedt and Pied, but now Bednarek is down and receiving treatment. He's fit to continue for the time being at least.

Ward-Prowse claims a penalty

Ward-Prowse goes down the right and tries to flick the ball over Johansen, who appears to block it with the point of his elbow. The Saints man wants handball in the box, but gets only a corner for his troubles.

Boufal denied by Button

Great work by Boufal, who produces a piece of magic to escape his marker down by the corner flag. He carries the ball along the byeline and shoots from the tightest of angles, but Button gets down sharply to divert the ball behind for a corner.

GOALSCORER 16 James Ward-Prowse

No mistake this time!

He'd only just gone close from distance, but this time the midfielder finds the target. Saints work the ball into the box as Long looks for Boufal, but the ball inadvertently drops to Ward-Prowse instead, who rifles a low left-footed shot into the bottom corner. Get in!

James Ward-Prowse (30’) | 0 1

Ward-Prowse goes close!

Saints break quickly as Boufal goes down the right and plays a square pass for Ward-Prowse, who takes aim and tries to pick out the bottom corner from 20 yards. It's just a yard or two wide.

Sessegnon's touch lets him down

Sessegnon sneaks in behind the Saints defence and looks to bring down a long pass from McDonald, but he cannot control it and the ball runs through for McCarthy. Saints need to be aware of these runs from deep from the 17-year-old.

Long goes close!

Ward-Prowse chases what looks a lost cause towards the corner flag, and succeeds not only in keeping the ball in play but also delivering a fine first-time cross. Long gets across the near post and stoops to head towards goal in front of Button, but cannot hit the target from an awkward angle.

Important block from Yoshida

Highly-rated youngster Sessegnon gets in behind the Saints defence, controls a high ball and lays it off for the onrushing Piazon on the edge of the box. The Chelsea loanee shoots first time and catches it well - it looks goal-bound until Yoshida bravely gets in the way.

Long denied by the flag 😩

So unlucky! Davis's brilliant backheel releases Long through on goal. He crashes a thunderous shot past goalkeeper Button to find the net, but the offside flag is raised and it won't count. Saints well on top here.

Bertrand and Boufal combine

Saints attack down their left side as Bertrand finds Boufal, who tries to tiptoe his way into the box only to be dispossessed by a well-timed tackle.

Saints dominate the early possession

It's been a very controlled start from the visitors, with Fulham struggling to get a touch in the opening exchanges. No clear chances as yet.

We're under way!

Saints get us up and running. It looks like Bednarek is starting the game at right-back, with Stephens alongside Yoshida in the middle.

against manchester united and against palace, before they equalised i thought we played a good game. in almost two games we were better than the opponent, but with one goal suddenly we lost control and everything changed. we have to learn that even in difficult moments, you have to continue with your plan. we want to move on a step forward, and i will use my best eleven to try and win the game.
