Joining the club aged eight, Irish born attacking midfielder Will Smallbone certainly put his name in Ralph Hasenhüttl’s plans for the 2019/20 season following two impressive campaigns as part of the academy.

The 2018/19 season saw the youngster thrive for the academy, adding a goal in the Premier League 2 play-off semi-final to his season tally of ten which saw Saints promoted.

In December of 2018 the youngster signed a two-year contract, which will eventually see his time at the club pass the ten-year mark in June 2021.

He went on to be nominated for the PL2 Player of the Season award, highlighting the impressive season he had operating in a variety of midfield roles.

Known for his close control and direct play, Smallbone is an integral cog in the midfield of Saints’ Under 23s side, leading to some appearances during the first team’s pre-season in the summer of 2019.

First-Team Saint

Smallbone continued to impress manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and was rewarded with a starting place in Saints FA Cup third round tie against Huddersfield.

The midfielder marked his senior debut with a goal just after half-time to seal a 2-0 win with fellow academy graduate Jake Vokins scoring the second.

The youngster then made his full Premier League debut in the 2-0 win against Aston Villa and won many plaudits for a controlled first outing in the centre of midfield.

Smallbone would go on to make another eight appearances, making it 10 for the 2019/20 season.

The Irishman was rewarded for his breakthrough 2020 with a new four year deal which runs until 2024.
