Danny Ings BiographyLast updated 30 Jul 2019
Former clubs: Bournemouth, Burnley, Liverpool
Born in July 1992, Danny Ings grew up in the Hampshire village of Netley, and was a boyhood fan of Southampton.
A pupil at Netley Abbey Primary School, Ings also played in the Southampton & District Tyro League, as well as the Saints’ youth set-up in his early years.
However, it was further along the south coast, with Bournemouth, where he got his first big break, impressing as a teenager and earning a place in their academy.
Ings made his Cherries debut in a 2-1 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat at Northampton, in October 2009, before his full debut arrived in a League One visit to MK Dons in December 2010.
A first professional goal wasn’t too far behind, as the forward netted in Bournemouth’s 3-2 home win over Swindon, in League One.
Breakthrough at Burnley
Ings would net another seven times in 2010/11, with his performances catching the eye of Championship side Burnley, who bought him as a 19-year-old in August 2011.
Ings, who played alongside Charlie Austin during his time at Turf Moor, took a little while to hit his stride there, with his big, breakout season coming in 2013/14.
In total, Ings netted 26 times in that campaign, earning the Championship Player of the Season prize, as Burnley finished second and won promotion into the Premier League.
A first top-flight goal arrived in October 2014, in a 3-1 home loss to Everton, as Ings netted 11 times across the course of the season.
His goals weren’t enough to prevent Burnley dropping down to the Championship, but Ings would not join them there, as he made the switch to Liverpool in the summer of 2015.
His first goal for the Reds came in September 2015, when he scored at Anfield in a 1-1 draw with Norwich, while he also netted in the Merseyside derby the following month, in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.
His first senior England cap followed a week or so later, as he came off the bench to feature in a 3-0 win for the Three Lions away to Lithuania in a EURO 2016 qualifier.
Cruelly, though, Ings would suffer a major knee injury only days after, in what was his first training session under new Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, damaging his cruciate ligament.
The injury sidelined him for the rest of the season, before he returned to action in a pair of League Cup games in October 2016.
In the latter of those games, at home to Tottenham, Ings suffered another serious injury, this time involving cartilage damage to his other knee, which ruled him out of the remainder of the 2016/17 campaign.
The return home
Ings again fought back for the 2017/18 season, featuring 14 times for the Reds, before he made the move to his hometown club in August 2018.
The deadline-day move saw Ings sign for an initial season-long loan, ahead of a permanent switch the following summer.
Ings enjoyed a strong first season at St Mary’s, scoring eight times by Christmas, before a couple of small injury issues slowed his progress in the second half of the campaign.
His contribution proved vital, though, in keeping the club in the Premier League, with Ings then completing his permanent switch in July 2019, signing a three-year contract.
