Defender Kyle Walker-Peters highlighted the squad’s belief and togetherness as the key reasons for the last-gasp winner over Watford.

Saints claimed the three points the hard way, having initially commanded a 2-0 advantage thanks to Will Smallbone and Ché Adams.

Ryan Porteous reduced the arrears before the break, with Ismaël Koné seemingly rescuing a point for the Hornets with just five minute remaining.

However, nine minutes into additional time Flynn Downes bundled home to cause pandemonium inside St Mary’s to keep the promotion push alive.

“Delighted to get the three points,” Walker-Peters began. “Slightly disappointed, talking in the dressing room, that we let them back into the game. It’s something that we’ve spoken about, not taking our foot off the gas, and I felt we did it today, but yeah, luckily we got that goal in the 99th minute.

“Our togetherness and belief from the players to the staff, we all trust and believe in each other and that’s why we’ve got such a good group and that helps drive us on.”

With all of the top three dropping points, victory sees Russell Martin’s side within seven points of second spot, a situation Walker-Peters says the squad are well aware of.

“We know what’s going on around us, we see people dropping points and we still have belief that we can get promoted automatically. We’re taking it a game at a time, but me dropping to my knees there shows it means everything to us.

“There’s been a few times where the teams above us have dropped points and we’ve not capitalised on it, so today it feels really good. We’re taking it a game at a time but if we win all our games who knows, so that’s our main focus.”
