Spacey-Cale: This is a really big moment

Southampton FC Women's manager Marieanne Spacey-Cale spoke of the pride in her side, following their 2-1 win at Championship side Lewes FC in the Vitality Women's FA Cup

The first of the two wonder strikes from Saints came on 39 minutes, as Georgie Freeland turned and fired her effort into the top corner to give Spacey-Cale's side the lead.

But despite conceding for the first time in the competition this season during the second half their heads did not drop, paving way for Rachel Panting to score an unbelievable winner from well over 30 yards on 79 minutes.

It was a result which typified the work and the belief of her side, who will now face Super League side Birmingham City away from home in the last 16.

"It was a performance that showed where these players are at," said the manager. "The resilience they've got, the work they've done during lockdown and the belief.

"Even when it came back to 1-1 we never doubted that we would have something to say during the rest of the game.

"We spoke before the game about the fact we wouldn't get many chances so we had to put them away. I'm looking forward to watching them back!

"Two really clean strikes and you get those opportunities because you are organised and defensively we were in such good shape today.

"We had to be resolute as defenders. We got a little excited at times but you can't fault that defensive display, it gave us that platform, and we put away those two chances.

"It's an exciting thing to look forward to [the match against Birmingham City]. We'll just go into it with no fear and see what we can do."
