A group of former Southampton players returned to the pitch on Monday 11th May, joining a Saints By Your Side community football session to see first hand the impact their support is having on men’s mental health across the city.

The visit marks the beginning of a new partnership between the Ex‑Saints and Saints Foundation, with former players committing to help fund the project and strengthen its long‑term sustainability. Their backing will also support the creation of a referral pathway for ex‑players who may benefit from joining the programme themselves, with the first cohort expected to begin later in the month.

Supporting Mental Health Across the Community

Saints By Your Side provides weekly wellbeing sessions for men, using sessions at the Stadium and football as a tool to build confidence, reduce isolation, and create safe spaces for open conversation. The Ex‑Saints’ involvement will help expand the reach of the project and ensure more people can access support when they need it.

During the visit, the former players took part in the football session, met participants, and heard directly how the project has helped them manage challenges, build friendships, and improve their mental wellbeing.

The event forms a key part of the Foundation’s Mental Health Awareness Week activity, shining a spotlight on the importance of accessible, community‑based support.

A Powerful Partnership

Paul Hedges Health Projects Manager at Saints Foundation, said: “Having the Ex‑Saints stand behind this work means a huge amount to our participants and our team. Their support helps us reach more men who may be struggling, and their willingness to get involved on the ground shows the strength of the club’s connection to its community. This partnership allows us to create a pathway for former players who might benefit from the project too, ensuring no one feels they have to face challenges alone.”

Saints Foundation currently delivers three key mental‑health initiatives:

  • Saints By Your Side

A weekly programme at St Mary’s Stadium offering men a safe, supportive space to talk, connect, and improve their wellbeing through guided activities and peer support.

  • Talking Tactics

A project designed for young people, helping them understand emotions, develop coping strategies, and build resilience through sport‑based sessions and 1:1 mentoring.

  • Extra Time Hub

Part of the Premier League’s Together Against Suicide initiative, this matchday support hub provides a welcoming space for fans at St Mary’s. Volunteers and trained staff are on hand to offer conversation, guidance, and signposting to anyone who may be struggling.

Together, these projects form a comprehensive pathway of support for fans and residents of all ages, ensuring the club plays an active role in promoting mental wellbeing across Southampton.
