Cult hero Marian Pahars is the latest subject of Match of my Day, an exclusive feature to the new Southampton app.
After Kelvin Davis told the story of his finest 90 minutes in a Saints shirt to keep out Leeds at Elland Road, iconic former striker Pahars remembers his final-day double against Everton at The Dell that secured Premier League survival in 1999.
The little Latvian had only recently joined the club from Skonto in his homeland, and speaks openly about his limited knowledge of Southampton and how he struggled to understand his teammates early on.
But in a frantic end to the season, Pahars was thrust into the spotlight and became an unlikely hero as Saints defied all logic to stay up, having been languishing in the relegation zone from August to May.
It proved the making of Marian, who went on to build an unbreakable bond with the club, scoring many more memorable goals over the course of his seven-year stay.
