It’s the first time Southampton have reached the semi-final of the Carabao Cup since reaching the final in 2017.
Southampton were at home in the first leg on that occasion too, taking a 1-0 win to Liverpool where the result was repeated.
With Newcastle unbeaten at home in the Premier League this season, Saints will want to once again head into the second leg with an advantage.
Facing Blackpool at home in the FA Cup on Saturday, Saints will once again be looking to build momentum to take into the Premier League at Brentford on the 4th February.
Defender Jan Bednarek, recalled from his loan spell at Aston Villa on Monday, is eligible to feature if called upon.
Theo Walcott is also back in contention, while Armel Bella-Kotchap, Juan Larios, Tino Livramento and Stuart Armstrong remain sidelined.
For the visitors, their largest boost is that Bruno Guimarães has made a miraculous recovery from an ankle injury picked up against Fulham last week.
Expected to be ruled out for weeks, the Brazilian completed 90 minutes against Crystal Palace on Saturday and did so unscathed.
Nathan Jones: "It’s a wonderful occasion. I wouldn’t say it’s a distraction, it’s not, it’s another challenge. A different challenge. It’s a wonderful game against a real tough side but it gives the club and everyone association with the club something special to try and achieve."
Eddie Howe: "Just being in the semi was all we cared about. Beating Leicester was our priority and then you take whatever is in front of you. We know what we have to do. It's going to be two really difficult games for us. I'm under no illusions of that."
ONES TO WATCH
Duje Ćaleta-Car: Saints’ summer signing has started the last four matches, producing some noteworthy performances in the heart of defence.
Likely to be up against the likes of Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almirón, the Croatian will need to find another commanding display.
Bruno Guimarães: The 25-year-old has four goals and three assists so far this season, becoming the hub of Newcastle’s attacking play.
With two goals from two visits to St Mary’s, Southampton will have to learn how to handle the Brazilian if they are to pick up a positive result in the first leg.
