Loan Watch: Payne assists late winner
There were more positive results for Southampton’s loan players last week, with youngster Lewis Payne making another impact off the bench. This and more in the latest Loan Watch…
In SkyBet League Two, Payne continued his recent form for Newport County with a telling contribution in their 1-0 win away to Doncaster Rovers.
The right-back was introduced off the bench at half-time, after being rested ahead of The Exiles’ crucial upcoming Emirates FA Cup replay, and played the entire second half on his 25th appearance of the season.
Payne delivered a pinpoint cross in the 93rd minute that was met by fellow-sub Seb Palmer Houlden to seal a dramatic late victory that lifted his side up to 17th in the table.
Further down the pyramid in England, there were victories in the National League South for two Academy goalkeepers.
Josh McNamara made his 10th consecutive start for St Albans City and helped them to a 2-1 win on the road against Eastbourne Borough, with the Non-League Saints enjoying a run of just one defeat in their last seven games.
On his second appearance for second-place Worthing, Josh Jeffries played his part in a 4-1 win over Truro City that got The Rebels back to winning ways.
Outside of England, Paul Onuachu was back in the goals before setting off to join the Nigeria squad at the African Cup of Nations.
The striker ended a four-game run without scoring for Trabzonspor when he headed home the eventual match-winner in the 45th minute against Samsunspor - his ninth goal of the season.
Goalkeeper Mateusz Lis was in between the sticks as Göztepe returned to winning ways in the Turkish second division, although he had a moment to forget when robbed of the ball to concede a stoppage time consolation in the 2-1 win over Sakaryaspor.
Finally, Duje Ćaleta-Car also had an afternoon to forget as Lyon suffered their first defeat in four games, with the Croatian centre-back sent off in the final minute of a 3-1 defeat against Le Havre.
