Southampton defender James Bree highlighted the importance of his side's return to winning ways against Coventry on Tuesday night.

The full-back was restored to the starting line-up after serving his one-game suspension, and played the full 90 minutes as Saints ended a three-match run without a win.

Ché Adams bagged a brace that proved to be the difference at St Mary's with the first taking a fortunate deflection off him from Kyle Walker-Peters' stunning strike.

His second was bundled home from a set piece, as Saints held out with a renewed sense of comfortability despite Coventry's second half goal that halved the lead.

"Yeah, it's massive - I think it's good for our confidence to play like we did as well." Bree assessed, "especially for the first 60, 65 minutes until they scored, I thought we were excellent.

Even in the last 20, even though we weren't on the ball as much, just grinding it out and defending with the boys is something that we've been working on and speaking about, so it's nice to get three points."

Having been restored to the starting line-up at the first opportunity since his red card against Ipswich, Bree explained the personal confidence he gained from the trust shown in him by Russell Martin.

"Yeah, just buzzing, obviously, being back around it with the boys. I've been working hard all season to get in and around the team and I think - obviously, the main aim is promotion so it doesn't really matter if you're starting or not - but I just want to help the boys as much as I can.

"After the Ipswich game, I was disappointed with how it ended, personally and for the team as well, but getting back in tonight and getting 90 [minutes] under my belt is a good feeling.

"I think Coventry are a good team, obviously, I played against them last year when they got to the play-off final.

You know what they can do, you know how they can hurt you and I think, to be fair, we limited them a lot and got around their main players."

On the remainder of the run-in ahead of Saints, Bree added "I think we're just going to take it game by game. We've got six games left, just to try and get the maximum amount of points that we can and just see what happens.

"Obviously, it's not over until it's over and we just keep going and if it's play-offs at the end, it's play-offs, if it's not, then we've done our job."
