Adams hails collective effort

Ché Adams was quick to praise Southampton’s defensive effort in blunting Everton’s attack, as the Premier League leaders were well beaten at St Mary’s.

Adams was on target as Saints scored twice in the first half, as the striker added to James Ward-Prowse’s first goal of the season, before the visitors were reduced to 10 men in the second period when Lucas Digne was shown a straight red for an ugly tackle on Kyle Walker-Peters.

It’s two goals in two games for Adams, but the in-form marksman was quick to hail the collective effort that helped Saints keep a third clean sheet in four games.

“It was a lot of hard work that we put in, and I think we deserved it in the end,” he said.

“I think we defended very well from the first minute. The first 20 minutes were very hard, but we dug in and managed to get the win.

“We were very compact and hard to break down, and I think that’s what won it in the end.

“We kept possession very well at the end and dug in deep for the three points.”

Adams’s 35th-minute strike came about when he and Ward-Prowse were both in position to dispatch Danny Ings’s far-post cross.

“I gave him (Ward-Prowse) a shout early doors and he managed to leave it for me,” Adams added.

It’s not the first time Saints’ front two have combined this season, with Adams previously assisting Ings for goals at Burnley and Chelsea.

“It’s credit to the team for helping me get into those positions and obviously Ingsy for providing me with the goals and vice-versa, so that’s something we look to work on,” he said of the ever-improving partnership.

“I think it just comes from playing games, getting to know each other and knowing each others' runs, so I think it’s definitely important for the two of us.”
