Ralph Hasenhüttl was overjoyed with a stupendous Southampton performance as they overcame last year's Premier League champions Manchester City to register a third win since the restart.

Saints had already brushed aside Norwich City and Watford, but needed a hearty and committed performance to see off Pep Guardiola's side, who had beaten this season's Premier League title holders Liverpool just three days prior.

The winning goal, scored by Ché Adams, typified the entire 90-minute display, which saw Saints fight for every first and second ball - something that made the manager particularly proud.

"You know that you have to run more than them, fight more than them but also you have to be sometimes brave with the ball to try and give them some problems," Hasenhüttl explained.

"We had some chances to score a second goal I think, but in the end it was an unbelievable fight from my side and we're very happy with this performance.

it is always possible when you're committed and you wait for the right moments.

"It is always possible when you're committed and you wait for the right moments. Ché, I'm so happy for him. He's worked so hard today and all the games before.

"Everyone was celebrating his goal and I cannot imagine a better time for him to score for the first time.

"We spoke about the goalkeeper who plays high but to take a chance like that is not so easy. It was a fantastic goal, and also how much Ché worked for the team was amazing.

"It gives us a lift. All of the strikers, but also all of my players today. The work-rate was unbelievable.

"Alex [McCarthy], I'm also so happy for him."
