Southampton's youngsters were left frustrated by visiting AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League Cup on Monday evening, losing out 2-0 at AFC Totton's Snows Stadium.

A goal in each half sealed the tie, with Cherries forward pairing Alex Dobre and Jake Scrimshaw on the scoresheet in the 23rd and 79th minutes respectivley.

Jack Bycroft saved a penalty in the first period, when 1-0 down, keeping the hosts alive in the game, but it wasn't enough to spark a revival.

It leaves Saints in a precarious position in their group, having played all their home times, but by no means out of the competition, with three more fixtures scheduled to be played in the new year.

The home side began on the front foot, taking the game to Bournemouth at almost every opportunity.

Kornelius Hansen had a chance for an opener in the 13th minute, cutting inside on right, before curling a low shot goalward, which was well saved by Mark Travers as the ball fizzed through a crowd of players.

Callum Slattery's free-kick flew a whisker wide of the post moments later, before the visitors enjoyed a spell of pressure, which resulted in the breakthrough.

Dinesh Gillela worked his way into the Saints area, and lay the ball into the path of Dobre, whose first time hit had struck the back of the net before Bycroft was able to react.

Indeed the Saints stopper was the busier of the two goalkeepers, having then faced up to Jaidon Anthony from the penalty spot midway through the half, and diving the correct way, rebuffed the effort before Harry Hamblin cleared.

The hosts trailed at the break, and weren't really able to stamp their authority on the game in the second period, although chances were much more frequent after the introduction of both Enzo Robise and Will Ferry part way through the half.

Searching for an equaliser left Saints open at the back, though, and ten minutes from time striker Scrimshaw settled the tie in similar fashion to the first goal, seizing on a counter attack and firing low from the edge of the area.
