Southampton's youngsters exited the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening after a narrow 3-2 defeat against League One Coventry City, at their temporary St Andrew's home.

The result makes it three group stage loses for Saints, who will finish Group D's southern section without claiming a point, despite running every one of their senior opponents close.

That indeed was the case against Mark Robins's experienced Coventry, who themselves are contesting the play-off places in their respective league, as a Max Biamou hat-trick proved the difference on the night.

Callum Slattery scored twice for the visitors, once from the spot, and once to restore parity in the second period after going two behind, before a stoppage time winner from Coventry's top scorer meant a cruel end to the tie, and competition for Saints.

A goalless first-half was more than eclipsed by the proceeding 45 minutes in Birmingham, which included a share of five goals.

Biamou netted his first from the edge of the area, sweeping home a smart cross from full-back Josh Eccles in the 52nd minute, before converting from the penalty spot after a foul from Slattery.

The goals were scored three minutes apart, putting the hosts into a commanding position, before Slattery atoned for his earlier error by scoring from a spot-kick himself.

Christian Norton was clipped in the box, and the captain stepped up to confidently slot home from 12 yards on the hour mark. Saints then drew themselves deservedly level, again through Slattery, whose shot from distance had too much fizz for Ben Wilson, as he let it slip carelessly through his legs.

There was late heartache for the youngsters in yellow and grey, though, as Biamou completed his treble in fine fashion, smashing home on the volley in injury time to seal the win.
