James Ward-Prowse praised Southampton’s resilience against Manchester City, even if the Premier League champions ultimately snatched maximum points at the Etihad Stadium.

It was Ward-Prowse who fired Saints in front early on, prompting a spirited defensive effort as City were unable to register a shot on target before Sergio Agüero’s 70th minute leveller.

Kyle Walker was the hosts’ unlikely hero, netting the winner four minutes from time, but Ward-Prowse believes the performance proves Saints can compete against even the very best teams.

“It was a disappointing end to a really solid performance,” he said.

“It’s been a tough week playing them twice, but we were able to refine our game plan and stick to it.

“Unfortunately, they grabbed a goal late, but we can be proud of ourselves and the performance we put in.

“We were resilient today. Not only the defenders, but I think the lads up front put in a great shift.

“We defend from the front and the way we defend against the ball is very important, but everyone to a man today can be proud of their effort.

“We’ve shown today what we can do against a top team in the world, so if we can do that to every team, we can get a lot more positive results.”
