Ralph Hasenhüttl was left proud of his players’ performance as Southampton were only denied a point by a late comeback from reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

Saints took an early lead through James Ward-Prowse, as the visitors perfectly executed their game plan at the Etihad Stadium.

Retaining the lead until the 70th minute, Sergio Agüero levelled before Kyle Walker completed the comeback inside the final five minutes.

Denied a point on the road, the manager was left full of praise for his side’s endeavours.

“I feel sad about the result, but proud of my players for what they put on the pitch today. It was exactly what everybody wanted to see; a reaction.

“It was an unbelievable defensive, disciplined performance, working against maybe the best footballing team in the world who didn’t really have too many chances, so it was fantastic what they did.

“In the end it was disappointing we didn’t get any points, only a few warm words, but it was important to show our fans we are better than we showed last week.

“It’s important for us to see we can defend in that way against such a team, but we know Everton (next week) is a completely different game. We play at home and must play differently, but we can and we will.

“Hopefully the supporters were proud of our team and the players today. We showed how much we can invest and we have to do it always and I think this is the most important thing for today.”
