Injured pairing Moussa Djenepo and Cédric have re-joined first-team training following periods on the sidelines with tendon and calf problems respectively, the manager has confirmed.

Neither are likely to feature during this weekend's trip to Manchester City - Saints' second outing at Etihad Stadium in four days - but will be in contention for the upcoming Everton fixture in early November.

Ralph Hasenhüttl also praised the performance of Alex McCarthy on Tuesday evening, having replaced Angus Gunn in all three Carabao Cup ties this season, but hasn't yet decided who will occupy the sticks when Saints return to Premier League action this Saturday.

Speaking about Djenepo and Cédric, the manager said: "They trained today, the first time with the team. This is positive. Moussa was very very positive, immediately laughing on the pitch. He has such a positive nature, it's fantastic.

"I'm happy that they are both back. It's probably a little bit too early for the weekend because today was only a light session. But the game after they are an option, yes.

"Sofiane [Boufal] had a slight problem with his knee after the midweek game and Reddie [Nathan Redmond] also, but they are okay and are both options for the weekend.

"Alex [McCarthy] made a good job on Tuesday, his body language was good. I haven't decided who will play in goal yet."
