Walking Cricket

By SFC Media Fri 06 Sep Saints Foundation

If you like cricket and especially if you love it, this is the session for you. All of the elements of the game are set at walking pace and allow you to enjoy benefits of exercise at the right level for you.

What is it like?
It is a relaxed pace version of the game, with the opportunity to take your turn to bat, field and bowl.  Points are scored by hitting the ball into the scoring zone, with no requirement to leave the stumps to score a “run”.  Whilst there is no running it can get exciting and competitive, but with a friendly atmosphere throughout.

What if I’ve never played?
If you have never played, the Saints Foundation team are on hand to help and the participants will always offer handy tips and support with everyone giving it a go.  We can give alternative options to help, making it the right level for you and if you need a seat, one can be provided too.

What’s in it for me?
As well as obvious benefits of improving your hand eye co-ordination, optimising your interactions between brain, eyes and the limbs which helps the execution of simple, daily functional tasks.  There is also the physical benefit of having an hour standing. It’s a great way to get out, make friends and enjoy the game.

How do I get there?
All sessions are accessible via bus and have parking available for your use.  If you need support with transport there are community support providers that we can point you towards for this.

Do I need to book?
Sessions are free of charge and there is no need to book, but if it is your first session then phone or e-mail first to ensure that the session is running, as there are odd occasions when we have to cancel.

What should I wear?

There is no need to buy any specialist clothing or footwear.  Dress in comfortable clothing, which allows you to move freely. Flat and supportive footwear is also recommended.  Layers are a great way to manage your temperature during the different seasons and bring a drink of water to keep hydrated.

How long is it?
Each session lasts for an hour. There is an optional social at the end, time to stay chat and have a cup of tea at the end.

When is it?
There are two sessions every week:

  • Monday 11:00-12:00 Testlands Hub, Green Lane, SO16 9RG
  • Wednesday 12:30-13:30 Newtown Youth Centre, 54 Graham Road, SO14 0AW (around the corner from St Mary's)
