Romeu: We have to react better

By SFC Media Sat 10 Aug Burnley v Saints

Oriol Romeu says Southampton must react better to going behind, after they fell to a 3-0 opening day defeat against Burnley at Turf Moor.

After an even contest, the hosts broke the deadlock just after the hour mark through Ashley Barnes, before two goals in quick succession put paid to Saints’ chances of taking points back to the south coast.

And while Romeu felt the side were competing well in the early stages, improvements must be made after conceding.

“That reaction has to be better. In the pre-season we haven’t had that, last season we haven’t been very good at coming back from a losing position,” Romeu said.

“We need to compete until the end. The game isn’t over until it’s finished, even if we are two or three nil down, we have our chances and we need to be competing better.

“That is something we cannot afford to do, throwing games after 60 minutes because we need points.

“After the first-half, we came in and we were just saying that’s how it is and we knew this game was going to be like this and how tough it is here.

“It’s always about competing and getting those 50-50s on our side and we were doing that. Unluckily, the long ball that Jannik couldn’t head away because of the wind took us out of the game.

“The goal came in and then everything fell apart. Then we were not anywhere near them. That reaction wasn’t what we had to show and the reaction wasn’t good enough.”
