Long withdraws from Ireland squad

FA Ireland have announced that Shane Long will play no part in their EURO 2020 qualifiers in the next week after the Saints striker sustained a hamstring injury in training.

Long had initially been called up to Mick McCarthy's squad for their qualifying double header this month but has now formally withdrawn from the group.

The 32-year-old will now have the opportunity to make a full recovery over the summer ahead of joining up with the Saints squad for the beginning of pre-season in July.

The Irish face Denmark in Copenhagen on Friday 7th June before hosting Gibraltar at the Aviva Stadium on Monday 10th June.
