Learn more about newly promoted German Bundesliga side 1.FC Köln, as Southampton’s pre-season plans continue to take shape…

WHERE DO THEY PLAY?

One year after their dramatic relegation to Bundesliga 2, 1.FC Köln returned to the German top-flight last season, finishing six-points clear of their nearest rivals SC Paderborn 07.

Their home, the RheinEnergieSTADION is located in the Müngersdorf area of Cologne at the same location as the previous Müngersdorfer Stadion.

A new FC stadium was constructed in 1975 before the stadium of today was built from 2002-2004, in time for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Its capacity is 50,000 (41,825 seated and 8,175 standing section).

HOW DID THEY DO LAST SEASON?

The 2018/19 promotion race went right to the wire in Bundesliga 2.

More commonly known in English as FC Cologne, they completed an immediate return to the Bundesliga, but the chase was on behind them with SC Paderborn 07, FC Union Berlin and Hamburger SV all separated by just four points going into the final game.

Cologne in fact secured the Bundesliga 2 title with two games to spare, and were promoted as champions, securing their fourth Bundesliga 2 crown.

WHO IS THEIR MANAGER?

Cologne announced Achim Beierlorzer as their new head coach for the 2019/20 Bundesliga season in early May.

The 51-year-old joined from Bundesliga 2 club Jahn Regensburg and signed a two-year contract with the Billy Goats.

Beierlorzer succeeded Andre Pawlak after the latter had taken over on an interim basis following the dismissal of Markus Anfang in April.

WHO ARE THE PLAYERS TO LOOK OUT FOR?

Star striker Simon Terodde was in devastating form during 2018/19. He had already finished as Bundesliga 2's top scorer in 2015/16 and 2016/17, and scored an impressive 33 times in 35 appearances last term.

The 31-year-old is seen as a traditional number nine; someone who can be relied upon to be in the right place at the right time.

DID YOU KNOW?

Cologne were one of the original members of the Bundesliga at the time of its inception in 1963/64 – and were even its inaugural champions that season.
