Angus Gunn declared his Premier League debut “a dream” after keeping a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge.

The 22-year-old shot-stopper joined Saints in the summer but had only featured in Carabao Cup ties before he was called upon for the club’s first league outing of 2019.

Gunn responded in style, making crucial saves from Eden Hazard, Alvaro Morata and Marcos Alonso en route to a welcome shutout – Saints’ first in 11 Premier League games.

“I’m delighted,” he said, following the goalless draw. “Just to make my debut was a dream, and to get a clean sheet was a massive bonus – especially for the team, because we needed it.

“In the last few games we’ve struggled a little bit – performances have been good but we haven’t quite got over the line, so to take this into the cup on Saturday and then into the league would be good.

“It was a big game – some would say a free hit for a lesser team to come to a top-four team and try to get a result, but we’ve managed to do that tonight.”

Gunn hailed the team effort in front of him, citing the passionate approach of manager Ralph Hasenhüttl.

“That’s the big thing he brought in when he came in a few weeks ago, and the lads have bought into it,” he added.

“For me on the pitch, passion is a really big thing that drives your teammates and yourself on to go that extra yard. We showed a lot of that tonight.

“We had to battle at times, but I think it was a really good team performance.”
