Danny Ings praised the impact of new Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl after the Austrian celebrated his first home match in charge by ending Arsenal’s 22-match unbeaten run at St Mary’s.

Ings, who scored twice on his return from injury in the first half of Sunday’s enthralling 3-2 victory, said it was clear to see the influence Hasenhüttl has already had at the club.

Now the striker wants to see Saints hit new heights, starting with another crucial game away at Huddersfield on Saturday.

“I think you could see it today,” Ings said of the Hasenhüttl effect. “We were pressing all over the pitch, and that comes from the training pitch.

“We haven’t had that much work with him yet, but you can see we’re going in the right direction and you can only take great confidence from a performance like that.

“When you come to the weekend and you know you’ve given everything in the week – tactically, watching clips – when you see a plan come off like today, there’s no better feeling.

“To go home to your family and friends knowing you’ve had a great week… as a club we should all take great confidence from today because it felt like we were all as one, on and off the pitch, which is fantastic.

“It’s huge – it’s exactly what we’ve needed. When you look at the position we’re in, quite frankly it’s not good enough with the players we’ve got.

“But I think today we’ve showed the level we can reach, and now it’s time for us to go beyond that.

“We’ll get back on the training pitch and look forward to the next game.”
