Stephens: Spirit can't be questioned

Jack Stephens believes anybody watching Southampton’s defeat at Tottenham cannot question the spirit of the Saints players.

The visitors found themselves behind early on at Wembley, before conceding two more goals soon after half time to a ruthless Spurs side.

But Saints enjoyed plenty of possession and had 18 shots on goal, only to run into an on-song Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal, who was finally beaten by Charlie Austin’s consolation strike in stoppage time.

“The spirit is there – we were fighting for each other, you could see that, and hopefully the fans were proud of us tonight because we really did give it everything,” Stephens said.

“I think everyone who watched that game tonight and watched the game on Saturday can see we’re still fighting for each other, we’re still fighting for the club and we’re still fighting for the fans. When you stop seeing that, that’s when it’s time to worry.

“I thought we played really well with the ball, and played some really good stuff.

“That’s the most disappointing thing because we’ve conceded three really poor goals – two from set-pieces – and at poor times as well, right at the start of the match and just after half time.

“It really made it difficult for us, and we’ve got to cut that out if we’re going to get out of this.

“We’ve shown how good a side we are and that we can compete with top teams. We’ve created five, six, seven really good chances, and hit the bar twice. Lloris has made three outrageous saves.

“The lads at the back and as a whole, we’ve got to defend better than that and give the front lads a platform to perform and win us the game. Tonight, unfortunately we didn’t do that.”
