Southampton will begin their 2022/23 Premier League Cup campaign after recording back-to-back wins in the league.

The 3-1 win over Sunderland on Monday means that Saints take a break from the Premier League 2 season whilst sitting in second place.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan continued his self-described "rich vein of form" with a brace, whilst Tyler Dibling was also on target in the North East.

Everton have enjoyed a steady start to the season as they sit midtable in Premier League 2 Division 1, a league above Saints.

Paul Tait's side come into the game after suffering their fourth defeat of the season last weekend when they were beaten 3-1 by league leaders, Arsenal.

They have enjoyed success in the Papa Johns Trophy this campaign, topping their group above Morecambe, Harrogate Town, and Hartlepool United, whilst they are also the early leaders of their Premier League International Cup group.

Saints are joined in Group F by fellow Category 1 academy, Everton, as well as two Category 2 academies in Birmingham City and Colchester United.

There has been one game played so far in the group, as Colchester ran out 2-1 winners against Birmingham in October.

"I think it was this time last year we got our first win and now we're on our sixth, so we've made massive strides.

"Now we're starting our cup journey after two good results in the league, which give us plenty of confidence going into the Premier League Cup." said Horseman, who will be aiming to progress out of the group for the first time since the 2017/18 season.

"Everton will be strong opponents that we won't have faced for a few years now, and it'll be the perfect test for us to keep our form going and get a solid start to the group stage."
